if you ask for a critique or advice on DA or any other art site, don't expect everyone to kiss your ass and say everything you draw or make is pure genius and quality.

MOST criticism on DA is meant to help you.

YOU MUST LISTEN TO CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM TO GROW AS AN ARTIST!

Can someone please tell that to the people writing critiques?

It seems like the barest amount of skill often gets high praise immediately, even if you try to press them they can't come up with any reasons, not for why they like it OR for what they think could be improved (and yes, I'm including both current and past works I did in this, that's actually what annoys me so much about it).

While I generally agree with this sentiment, how would you critique something amounting to Michaelangelo's "David?" Saying anything less than rainbows and fluffy bunnies would look peevish in comparison (No, I can't stand fluffy bunnies and rainbows).

Just saying.

Oh gosh I've seen thousands and thousands of critique that were just butt kissing.
If you want to give compliments to someone, just leave them a nice comment :3
Critiques are here to make you improve. If you just say ''AWESOME'' all the time, you won't help anyone to improve.

now all we need is a compliment stamp that says "Critique does not equal negative insults".

there's a lot of stamp like this already (;

ah, but some people view any criticism as negative insults, that's the point, maybe "critique does not equal bashing drawing ability?"

I mean if you look up the definition..(according to wikipedia) a critic is a person who offers reasoned judgment or analysis, value judgment, interpretation, or observation.

There's no mention of insult there. Most people's definition of the word is completely wrong. :/

i think i might make a few stamps myself.

5 years later... I was looking at your comment and thought I'd add my

Nor does that definition say anything about moderating that analysis with positive input. Granted, saying "This looks like " makes the commenter look very unintelligent, but a observation doesn't necessarily have to say something positive.

I am reminded of professional food critics or critics of plays/movies, who give an unvarnished and factually negative review. We expect them to say "this isn't worth the trip!" though we expect it to be "reasoned" as to why it isn't.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you, but try reasoning with some of the less sane people on here, and you'll see what I mean, I've offered some kindly worded criticism, and gotten flipped out on claiming I was just a hater XP

i got you beat.

i offered a mere observation. a small sentence, not even with an attitude or tone. and the girl flipped out, left me a long note on how she was never going to do art again and deactivated her account. XDDDDDDDD

Probably, when I have the extra money for it I might. I'd probably wait to see if they had some event at which you could get them for cheaper. The prices are a bit high for something on the internet.

I hate that so much. The new critique feature doesn't help. If you want to kiss someone's ass, don't pretend it's a critique. If someone asks for critique, tell them what's wrong, or move on to another.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

mishihime In reply to LunaXJJ [2010-04-23 17:59:16 +0000 UTC]

the new paid feature makes critiques seem even more elitist than people thought they were to begin with... SIGH it's a big step back for all artists.

mishihime In reply to kohakuhoshi [2010-04-23 18:01:37 +0000 UTC]

I hate that. You try to be nice, don't even say anything bad and someone goes apeshit back at you. Then you feel like being the biggest bitch in the world just to show them the difference.

"HATERZ? ILL SHOW THEM HATE!! > :E *RAGE*"

lol

Wow, that's ridiculous. That's why I liked the old critique system. You'd know if someone didn't want criticism.

Silly *kohakuhoshi , critique is for extended praise! UR SO MEEN.

Why would anyone come to an art community expecting tips, constructive crits, and the exchange of ideas and techniques? I mean liek omg. /sarcasm.

But seriously, I don't give asskiss crits (which aren't really crits anyway) and I don't like getting them, either.

Because you're so awesome and cool and amazing and attractive and I love you and you're God and you're cool and you're groovy and you're hip.

NOW CAN YOU POST MY ICON IN YOUR JOURNAL???

hee hee

any of my finished pieces are open to critique, just not the new critique style since I haven't finished any projects (I discourage critiques on WIPs usually because they're in progress and not as good as I can make them without input yet.)

mishihime In reply to kohakuhoshi [2010-04-23 18:03:09 +0000 UTC]

I must be a bit opposite of you then. I would rather have someone crit my WIP so I can fix it, rather than after I'm done and I reaaaaaaalllllly don't feel like messing with it.

Man I wish I could get some good crits,
It's like people are afraid,
To hurt someone's feelings,
And it's so funny,
When you know somethings wrong on a piece,
But everyone thinks it's flawless.
