I had a dream years ago of a shop near the community college in my town . In this shop were racks of books and paintings all on the subject of Christmas . None of the paintings were conventional , and the ones that I was able to recall after I woke were the more drastic ones (ie a vampire Santa, prostetic candy canes) . But I found that as I began transcribing those that gradually many of the others began filtering back into my head .
I usually do a few of these (as time allows) every year, just to keep that "shop" open for business . I've ended up using them as decorations and Christmas cards , and am uploading them here for this purpose(s) . I consider them to be outside of the mainstream of my work , but on the other hand I really enjoy playing around with the strange chimera that the western holiday of Christmas has become ... a wonderfull and heady mix of the sacred and profane . Perhaps it's that unlikely mix that I find attractive .
The majority of these (there are nearly 100) were quickly painted , aiming primarily to capture a poetic moment on the moment rather than execute a highly finished work . Look at me apologizing , ha .
