The Fherlas are an enlightened species hailing from the eternally-nocturnal (sans a single day where the sun rises) planet Nhar. Appearance-wise, their skin colors range from a bright yellow to a deep pink, ironically adopting sunlight colors for their skin, hair, and other pigmented areas of their bodies. They have 3 fingers on each hand (they wish they had more), and have longer ears adapted for better listening. Fherlas grow pretty short, with height averaging 4’9”-5’1”. They can completely see in the dark, which proves useful in their own home planet. They are a species that values knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge above all, in areas such as science, art, and otherwise. The species does have a male and female sex, but the dimorphism caused by the gender assigned at birth doesn't exist, and a male could have "traditionally" female-looking features and vice versa, they don't pay much attention to the concept of gender otherwise, it is just a biological marker to them. Anyone can have and grow the beard, but unless they earned it, they must take specialized pills that stop their facial hair growth. If they earn the rank of say mustache, they will be permitted a month without the pills to grow whatever hair theyre allowed, and after the shaving ritual, they must take the pills again to stop facial hair growth in other areas. They are typically vegetarian- opting out of eating other creatures meat. Fherlas cuisine can be compared to oatmeal

HOME PLANET:

Nhar

Nhar is a majorly forest biome, with a former abundance in resources that is declining due to the species over-use of its resources in the pursuit of innovation. The Fherlas claim it is well within control, but the resources in the planet are at a strain, greed overcoming even the most logical of crowds. As an advanced society, the species utilizes a nearby mini-star to power its many contraptions. Its energy output has been manageable the first 2000 years the species existed, but as the star thats harnessed is about to die out in the projected next 4500 years or so, the species is attempting to relocate to another planet, or to develop technology advanced enough to propel the whole planet. No dice so far.

The Nhar society ranks its people according to facial hair, with a bare-face being the least ranking, and a person with a full, decorated long beard being at the very top. Getting a beard, or advancing to the next facial-hair stage is a high and special honor, obtained after years of gruesome work, and proving yourself to be worthy of the beard. The society of the Fherlas is a harsh and callous one, maintaining professionalism that extends to even family members- who are just people you stay with in sectors you are assigned to at birth. Their pursuit of the arts is concerned more with semantics and color theory rather than the underlying emotion and passion within each piece. They are a largely pacifist society, concerned more with the pursuit of a higher calling. As such, each person is highly knowledgable on different species and cultures, and many superiors join the Ad Astra foundation, travelling far and wide to expand the planet's knowledge horizons and add more information to its expansive library. On the rare occassion that the sun rises on Nhar (once every 11 years), the Fherlas hold a single-day celebration called the SOLREI, where they gather to share poetry, art, and hold fairs similar to the historical "science fair". This is perhaps the only time the Fherlas truly embrace the beauty and joys of life, and it is an occasion many Fherlas look forward to, albeit in secret.

They are a well-guarded society, only exchanging knowledge to the public, and they prefer not to mingle with other planets unless needed. With the occasion of a few crucial research-based planetary field trips, leaving Nhar is incredibly unlikely unless a Fherlas individual wants to join Ad Astra, or take up a pursuit of equal weight.

In Fherlas society, how well-versed you are largely depends on your ranking: ergo, the bigger your beard the more knowledgable you are- the more knowledge you are allowed to gain. This system has been abused before, and while the public and less ranking members of Fherlas society believe the Fherlas to be an honorable people, the truth to this guarded species remains closed.

Nikolas enjoys company and tends to give good advice if asked, as a result of practiced critical-thinking. However, ashamedly to him, Nikolas is very prone to anxiety, worrying over many things. He seems tense at all times, despite his positive demeanor, and if confronted he will state outright denial at his mental state. He tends to overthink, a side-effect of an "enlightened society", and he deals with his own problems by ignoring them. Shame and insecurity might as well be his middle name, and if he is criticized, he will bend-over to avoid further admonishment even to his own eventual discomfort.

While friendly, Nikolas holds himself incredibly professionally, due to his upbringing. He dislikes physical contact, but if need be he will lend a shoulder both physically and metaphorically even if he personally might prefer not to deal with it.

Youth → Nikolas IV was born and assigned to Sector 4^8, named after a notable Earth scientist, Nikola Tesla, as most Fherlas would be named after notable members of prior Earth Society. He is one of many Nikolases, in fact as redundant as it is, Nikolas shared Sector 4^8 with the three other Nikolas. There have been many confusions.

Nikolas lived as Fherlas do, with methodical studying of books, poetry, science and the like. There is no parental unit in each sector, just an instructor, and Nikolas's instructor was an inspiring lady, Ada II, with a full, decorated beard. Nikolas wishes to someday have that.

Adolescence →

Teen years are a difficult time for many, and most of all Nikolas. He enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge, learning every single day feels like a dream and privilege to him, but thoughts crept up his mind. Surely, there was more to this? How can we learn poetry about love and triumph and yet we dont experience them or share those feelings? He wondered if others had the same thoughts, and asked a sector-mate of his once (they were basically best friends in Fherlas standards), who immediately shut him down. He stopped asking and dug those feelings deep down, ignoring odd pangs of jealousy when reading about people who experienced the expanse of the world, and feeling shame above it all.

Seeing the sun rise during Solrei when he was 11 was life-changing to him, and experiencing the events and celebration of Solrei changed everything.

He was averse to conflict, but as it stands Nikolas was considered a menace to society with his teenage-rebellion phase of "Shakespeare in the park" re-enactments and partaking in slam poetry. These are things to be studied, the Fherlas said, but Nikolas felt they were to be experienced, on all days, not just during the Solrei. Later, he realized the poetry and arts section in the digital library available to him on his datapad got smaller. Fine, he got the message.

Adulthood →

The fire inside Nikolas had dimmed from the eventual anxieties of adulthood, forgoing his past childish stunts.

He put poetry and music aside, focusing largely on science and research. It yielded more practical results, and frankly the more distance the better, which also meant less disapproval from the superiors. His persistence and passion to explore (he went on every planetary research trip he could go on) eventually rose him through the ranks, well enough to earn a mustache! The ritual that day was one of the best moments of his life, his former sector-instructor, now a Superior Order Member gave him a nod of approval! What joy!

Solrei came again, and sharing poetry that day reminded him of how much he truly needed it, truly needed to get out there. Thinking about the next step of his life, Nikolas decided to finally take the plunge and leave the planet in pursuit of joining Ad Astra, wishing to gain more practical knowledge of the world and its experiences, on a more prolonged basis than the usual research trips he frequented.

Fherlas society usually forbade anyone to venture out without purpose, so upon asking the Nhar superiors for approval on his request, they declined. Unless you earn a beard, they stated, you cannot wish to have even an inkling of the knowledge needed to consider joining the organization.

Nikolas was disheartened. Sitting in his pod, browsing interplanetary news, Nikolas came across a posting for the Penumbra mission. It seemed foolish, it seemed scary, but what better way to prove yourself and roam the galaxies than searching for Eden?

The superiors approved. If Nikolas found the place, they could be heralded as heroes, and if he didn't... Well, Nikolas V was growing to be a promising young woman.

INVENTORY:

-Pill case which includes:

>Sleeping Pills- obtained on a port prior to boarding the Penumbra, he denies having it but he knows he'd never sleep on the ship otherwise due to his insomnia.

>Fherlas Pills- to stop his facial hair from growing.

-Journal- he bought it on a trip to New Gaia taken by his sector on a study and research expedition. It may have been sold for way more than it should cost but Nikolas is none the wiser. He records most of his research data on here as well as his personal notes and sketches.

-Fherlas Datapad- standard issue. Most Fherlas use it to record field notes, and while Nikolas may occasionally use it for that, he mostly uses it as a glorified e-reader, as it has direct access to the Nhar City Library, within certain restrictions.

-Kalimba- he loves music, and this is small and portable enough to carry around with him. He plays random tunes, but is currently working on learning the chords to A-Ha's Take On Me. He finds the tune to be fun! Lyrics were lost to the Fherlas however.

-Nikolas has the beginnings (and end, and ramblings) of a story he created written in his journal. It's nowhere near complete, and he feels very insecure about sharing it with others though. He also has some small poems he wrote. They speak mostly of sunrises.
