Cuz the whole point behind it, so far as I could tell, was that the afro Shinigami guy (Gennosuke?) was supposed to take over duties of the city, and Rukia wasn't supposed to go back for any reason. The anime kinda made the idea a misnomer though by having her always popping up for random reasons (holiday greetings, etc) but I don't think she would've been allowed to in the manga-verse.

At least, that's how I rationalize it. It's the only logical explanation I can think of, cuz I figured she could just swing by in a Gigai whenever too.

But I'm pretty sure Rukia is allowed to go anywhere she wants on her free time, and i'm even more positive that her Captain would be perfectly alright with giving her permission to go as well. Ukitaka is a very easy going guy, I'm sure he'd have no problem with Rukia spending her days off in the human world, and she can always be On-call.

Really, the idea just has so many holes and only serves to screw with Ichigo even more by having him loose all contact with Rukia

If she's not being told to stay away from Karakura Town, then it just means she's being an asshole by avoiding it on her own terms. I think it makes more sense that she's being told to do other things. She wouldn't just abandon Ichigo.

I think it's just bad writing, or the old man is just a really big asshole. because Ukitake is too nice a guy to keep rukia away from ichigo and he's the only one who has any real authority over her besides her brother and the general, and Rukia's been known to go against her brother's wishes now and then

I feel like you ask unnecessarily pointless questions just so you can get my opinion and then argue with me over it. The story is what it is, whether Kubo bothers to give us a reason for it or not. Bleach isn't exactly stellar. The Redux was my attempt to make sense of the senseless. My answer earlier was my best guess as to why things turned out the way they did. Being all "yeah well Ukitake was a nice guy" doesn't really mean anything. Rukia was given a promotion to Lieutenant. She wasn't allowed to just run off anymore. The only unknown is WHEN she got promoted.

Look, I'm sorry if I get into arguments, but I'm legit in my curiosity. But a promotion does sound logical tbh, and i'm sorry for not thinking of that myself, but can you please not think of me as some angry fan nerd or something? I just like to talk about the stuff that interests me.
