Is this unicorn a particular character, or was she just designed for that picture?

Well... funny story actually.
I sketched the picture out with a pony in mind and started working on it right away. I even created the base body without thinking too much about it. It was very late in my work process when I actually started to wonder about her. I asked some friends and got good suggestions. The evening before finishing the picture, I knew exactly what pony she would be.
While I have no definitive name yet, I imagine her to be a sort of explorer, mostly with her field of expertise being old magic and inscriptions.Β I imagine her to be a little bit clinical in her behaviour towards others, mostly toΒ mask a more timid nature and other insecurities. Her understanding regarding old magics is pretty impressive although her magical capabilities themself are rather weak.
She can be very determined and even persuasive if it is related to her work. She is an even more "no-nonsense" person in this regard. It's difficult for her to accept advice.
When studying old texts she has a knack for reading between the lines. She may understand the author and their motivations and emotions from simply looking at the hoof-writing.

Wow, I didn't expect that you'd have a whole background for her! You sure had a burst of inspiration

Ah well, if you work for a while on a Pony and you think of a cutie mark, the mane, the tail, the expression... it's bound to happen at least a little bit

I can see why! It's so mysterious yet pleasant to look at it.Β Β

You created a beautiful feeling of mystery and danger for the pretty protagonist. Terrific job on the old shaft with beat-up tracks and remnants of gems and old rickety supports, making it feel claustrophobic; yet then there's the drop-off into the big honkin' darkness for a different kind of fear to instill. Still the sense of wonder is so much stronger than the feeling of danger at every step. Your pony's expression is the perfect mixture of fascination and fear that I'm feeling too. Absolutely fantastic work.

Now I just hope that the pony in the distance actually sees the complete track ahead of him β otherwise that first step is a doozy! Also, the border/trim for the card version is quite lovely too, plus I can't help but feel that the colored circles are clues in themselves.π: 0 β©: 1

I'm glad I got the mix of emotions right. I was actually trying out
something new. I listened to fitting music while drawing the picture.
I had long instrumental tracks playing, mostly calm and eerie and
only occasionally with vocal elements thrown into it, also some
classical music.
The pony in the distance should be fine, he is a trained professional!
If not... at least there is someone there to help him out.
Strangely enough, the very first idea I had for the artwork was
absolutely perfect. In some pictures I really have to try multiple
sketches but this one was clear as day for me. It's even more
baffling to me that it took me this long to actually finish the picture.
