In this context "Girl" is a child female and "woman" is adult female. Getting her to say she is a "woman" is getting her to mentally see herself as growing up and graduating into being female like an adult. She is no longer just playing dress up games like a little child.

Aunt Becky is a wonderful teacher, and I really love the change in the font to symbolise the change in Melissa's view of herself. It's a lovely cap! But I was a little confused at the beginning. Where is the conversation actually taking place? If Aunty and Melissa visited a dress boutique earlier in the day, isn't that 'going out in public'? If only in the walk from the car to the shop door? And was Melissa wearing heels then, or not?

Yes, that part wasn't entirely clear. Aunt Becky dragged her reluctant niece off to the dress shop to give her time out in public and she obviously did all the talking. I wanted to get into Melissa's head to document the moment where Aunt Becky broke Melissa's self doubts and got Melissa to see herself as a girl, and I didn't know how to include that detail without taking the story away from Melissa and making it a story about Aunt Becky.
