Something I have been working on for the past three days.JCAT - Jumpship - Carrier, Air Transport
Essentially a flying aircraft carrier, it also possesses limited a FTL capability, with a "jump" radius of about 25 Astronomical Units. Longer distance jumps are possible, but require longer charging time and they can cause tremendous strain on both the ship and space/time, potentially resulting in strange or deadly occurences.
A combination of magnetic fields and vectored thrust allows a JCAT to hover, with a maximum ceiling of 7 kilometers.
JCATs are designed to operate as mobile airbases. The jump ability allows fast response to a hot zone, either on-planet, or on another one elsewhere within a system. While not intended for vacuum operations, JCATS do have the ability to seal up if a longer distance journey requires jumping into space. A lack of artificial gravity makes this somewhat awkward, and all craft and loose equipment must be locked down. They do not have the ability to store, maintain, or equip space or transatmospheric ("atmosphipian") craft, as these by necessity are at least twice the size of conventional aircraft.
The restriction to atmospheric-only operations and limited range resulted in only a half a dozen or so rolling off the slipways. Most of these have been mothballed or scrapped...
Various views of the ship "under construction". Not all of the air hatches are placed yet, nor elevators. Trying to figure out where to place an elevator so it has easy access to the portside catapults without interfering in anything else... An overheat shut down (stupid me, blocking the vent) undid what i had originally done for the rear wing, but that was okay because when i booted back up again and loaded my most recent iteration i did an extrusion, which looks MUCH better than the clunky hinged-wing i started.
Nearly everything between the flight deck and the "sea-hull" has been rebuilt; the elevators are probably the only thing there i haven't completely removed and rebuilt since they were made. All the decks visible until about Frame 15 were pulled eventually and new ones with better spacing (.5 meter thick decks, with 3 meters of space between them) put in. The main hull also. And oh mighty Wodan, did i overdo it with the original Command Deck (Bridge), that mass of viewports in the bow in the early frames. Was the size of a hangar all by itself, like 50 meters across! The new one is much more reasonably sized at about 15 meters x 20... Might replace all of the large, visible supports, but we shall see what I actually intend to do.
Ignore the shitty planes, they're just for scale and placement reference for when i actually get around to modelling some Swans and BUNIs and such, so i wouldn't accidentally make openings too small. Carrier based aircraft usually have folding wings anyway, but...
Still gotta figure out where to mount CIWS systems, and sensors and stuff... What to do about the SuperSWITCH... Not likely to do all of the internal layout.
in his original description, nommy neglected to mention what sort of reactor powers a JCAT... fission pile? deisel motor? hand-cranked dynamo?
JCAT vehicle concept, MASA, AMAZON, and the FMP belong .

Wow man, just wow. You had me at "JCAT". Nice acronym, and a clever callback to the CAT Suit.
This is incredibly well thought-out. I'm going to have to go over this again when I'm less bleary-eyed, so I can comment in greater detail.
Good show, sir.
