Description
From the 1920's to the 1970's all predatory animals,(With some exceptions.) were cast as villains in animated cartoons.Wolves, foxes and cats were at the top of the list.Β
My drawing depicts a fox who has caught a mouseΒ and is about to be clobbered by any number of super heroes of cute
and helpless critters.

Usually, foxes aren't the "big bad" in a story, just a high-ranking mook. Even in Redwall, which villainizes foxes to no end, rarely are they not working for some worse creature. More often, they play the opportunistic antagonist angle. Nice work, regardless.

You're correct. Take the medieval tale Reynard and Isengrim. Although the wolf was the more powerful of the two,
The fox always managed to get the best of him.Β
It is interesting to note that Native Americans told a similar tale of the coyote, "The Trickster."

Seems this fox is in big trouble now - very nice work here on him and that mouse.

Now those animals are like, the three most common things in anthro art. I wonder what the reason is behind that.

You're right, they are the most popular animals to anthropomorphize. It may be due
to the fact that most anthro artists can strongly identify with canines and felines.
An extension of their personalities so to say.Β

I never got into em. I was more into frogs or rats or anything else with an uncivilized stereotype.

That's exactly why I chose an aardwolf to be my fursona.
One rarely sees this species as a OC on the many
groups that feature anthro animals.Β Β

And you rarely ever see grimdark backstories on goofy animal species.

That's not always the case nowadays. They have made heroes out of fox characters (Robin Hood, Mr. Fox, Nick Wilde etc.). Though they still present them as crafty and cunning.Β

You're absolutely right. Attitudes towards the fox,(And predatory animals in general.) have changed
considerably since the early days of animated cartoons.Β

I've noticed this myself -- As an oldest child, I was always righteously indignant when mice, rabbits, etc. conquered the predators and upset the natural order of things.Β It didn't occur to me that the makers of these cartoons were only trying to empower my fellow kiddies and I
Fine job, as always!

Thank you!Β
As a child I had much the same opinion as you. But in retrospect I see that these older cartoons were
depictions of the "Little Guy always defeats the Big Guy." Stand up to bullies of this world.Β

I've yet to decide on a pose for Chayton. I'll sketch out some thumbnails and from these
I'll choose a pose from them.Β
