Happy birthday, a favorite fictional character of mine, have a strangely coloured doodle of of a fluffy future.Don't you dare not survive that war, you have many hugs to give and receive.
Watercolour, black brushpen and 0.05 pen, coloured 0.4 pens, a bit of gouache (mainly white), black ink, marker, and acrylic paint for the background. A bit of tabletop game figure paint for the ai and Gaara's eyes. Done on yellow paperboard and slightly edited with PaintShopPro.
What a strange thought that this is the third year there are dates like "Gaara's/Naruto's birthday" marked in my calendar. This fandom, it is inescapable.
(...Or fourth year, depending on how you count it, because I got into this series during a summer and so the January 19th of that year had of course already passed. But, well, Gaara is supposed to have been born the year after Naruto was, anyway, so how very canongeek of me that my related birthday fanart collection accumulates in this order, don't you think.
I'll just shut up now.)

The colors immediately make me feel a warm sunset and I love the feel of comfort and loving that Gaara and Naruto have here (versus the 'we rock babe, let's go kick some ass' which I love as well XD). Wonderful piece m'dear :'D

Also. Were you also upset that Gaara lost his Bijuu? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad that he can sleep and is sane now, but I kinda wished he'd be able to conquer it like Naruto did.

Yeah, a little, it could have been pretty awesome. I think they did have some sort of boss battle after the chuunin exam to establish that Gaara's no longer taking orders from Shukaku, but it probably wasn't as literal (this picture was in fact inspired by such fanfic ).
And I bet Naruto would have been there to hold his hand and help and have chats with him inside his head. :D
Speaking of Shukaku, I wonder if we'll actually still get to see him (her? it?) again.

(I love that picture SO much!) That's a really good question... But probably not, unless Naruto can save the day expel all the bijuu from wherever they're being held at, most likely, the end of the manga. I mean, he can't destroy them because aren't they part of the balance of the earth/nature/all chakra or something of importance?
And yes. I know Naruto would have definately helped Gaara out (even if he didn't know how, he'd STILL TRY. Jeez Kishimoto).

Thanks. Getting the colours right was an interesting ordeal.
I at first thought that Gaara is older, too, his birthday being at the beginning of the year while Naruto's is at the end, but nope. If Gaara was older than Naruto then either Naruto would have been still only 11 years old during the chuunin exam (which was in July-August, between their birthdays) or Gaara would have been already 13, because their age difference would have been a whopping nine months, but they were both 12 at the time. It makes more sense (and I think it's specified that it's so in one of the databooks, too, but I'm not sure) that Gaara is born not in the same year as Naruto and his classmates, but the following year (making him the youngest in their age group and also, most likely, out of all of the chuunin exam participants - which is pretty badass considering how well he did there). This way his and Naruto's age difference is only three months, and at the time of the chuunin exam Gaara has turned 12 that year and Naruto hasn't yet turned 13, and also I'm under the impression that the decision to seal Shukaku into Gaara was influenced by Suna finding out about Naruto and wanting a jinchuuriki of their own for power balance.
So Gaara is three months younger than Naruto, a month younger than Hinata, and a year younger than Shino who also has a January birthday. :)

Like superΓΌberglue, they do! :D No complaints of course, this fandom has brought me lots of awesome things and I continue to be very much in love with the characters. Narutardom is a happy state of being, who would have thought.

Awesome color choice, not only doe sit help make it look vaguely candle-lit, but it also makes it incredibly warm and fluffy and sweet~
I also love how the robe thingy fell off Gaara's shoulders, for some reason it speaks to me a whooole damn lot about the trust and intimacy between Naruto and gaara, because I sincerely can't see him in front of anyone the sightliest bit rumpled, except maybe siblings, and that's one bug maybe...
And I love how gaara looks like if he were wondering if he should wrap a bell around Naruto's neck and maybe open a tuna can XD

I did want the lighting to look like either candles or a dim desk lamp. Gaara hasn't noticed the sun has set since he started, when the room was naturally well-lit enough for him to not need to turn on the main light (that's what usually happens to me with drawing or computering).
Haha, "robe thingy" is right - it's supposed to be some kind of dressingrobe-ish, and indeed comfy-but-frumpy. And, I think so, too. He's always pretty neat and groomed in public, isn't he, which I suppose goes with being a leader, but maybe also with the way he generally is with people and trust. Naruto he'd so trust with his life and more (

It's extra awesome because of the different body types and sizes- naru is noticeably bigger/hunkier and Gaara is kind of scrawny/waifish, and yet it's Naruto who's usually all wrapped around Gaara, which is all kind of cute and awesome and winful XD
rando, but something a fan like you will appreciate... I was talking with a male friend about Narugaa in general, and I asked him "If Gaara confessed he loves Naruto, would you be surprised?"
his answer was "Nope. Not at all."
to which my *other* male friend replied: "Oh please, didn't you see him talking with Kankuro about what an inspiration Naruto was? The only think missing from that speech was 'And next time we meet, I'm gonna try and hold hands with him~<3 :3 '"

I've drawn Gaara wrapping himself around Naruto quite a bit, too, haven't I... But Naruto is a more touchy-feely person, yes. Gaara only is when it comes to him. (cue audience awwww)
Hahaha, Gaara's as good as confessed a couple of times already, hasn't he. Anyone who can't see it is deliberately trying not to. :)
(And yes, that totally was holding hands more than it was a handshake - they shook hands, like, once for appearances and then just didn't let go until the shot had to be cut because it would have taken the rest of the episode to show them finally stop looking at each other like they're waiting for someone to say "you may kiss the groom". Or maybe they cut it because they did kiss.)
