i'm pretty much disappointed lately by all the people who prefer positive themes in photography. vivid warm colors, smiles and all that c--p. and they're not saying it out loud of course, they just tend to like crazy any tanned girl in orange swimsuit and... that's it, nothing else matters at this point. and of course they ignore everything else. it's a good thing minor key is normal and respected in music. what's so wrong about some pain and drama in photography?

nothing wrong with pain. it's part of life, so we have to suck it up and deal with it. anyone who says otherwise is too happy.

but sheesh, her fingers look unnaturally long! stuff like this is way more interesting than tan and blonde chicks. creepy and/or horror and macabre stuff can be changed around in so many ways. there's more imagination it this kind of art than other kinds.

the lighting matches the overall effect of the photograph, and the lighter sky with the darker crows adds an effect i can't really describe. kinda like they're dark angels or something either protecting the object (in this case the model) or coming to drag it to hell. well, that's what i think it means.

When I first looked at this photo, I almost immediately felt horrified and awed at the same time. The model's skeletal, drooping hands and caved-in stature, combined with the thinness of her body, takes the whole concept of scarecrows for a nightmarish spin. The grimness of the sky and water create a foreboding atmosphere that is quite perfect for the subject's pose. The model's face is hidden by scraggling black hair as if she were a creature from another life, rising out of the water for some sinister purpose, her creatures swirling in the sky above her head. Her nakedness makes it even more possible to believe she is not of this world, but from one more serpentine and surreal.

The girl's hands seem unnaturally long and skeletal; I personally think they are the creepiest part of the photograph. Everything speaks of a desperation that is macabre but impossibly gorgeous. Admittedly, I would run like h*ll if I saw this girl walking out of the water towards me. I hate to bring up this movie, but I am reminded of a little girl in cinema who will unfortunately forever haunt my dreams, Samara from the movie The Ring (there, I said it). Credit should go not only to the girl who posed for this, but to the photographer for being so unafraid to do something as different, as horrifying, and as dynamic as this photo, something that many photographers would be hesitant to do.

That I get so many contradicting impressions from this photo supports the power of its gothic beauty and astounding originality. Part of its dynamic is the receding horizon contrasting with the forward movement of the subject, approaching the viewer seemingly out of a nightmare. It definitely caught my eye and I hope it catches many more, getting the attention it deserves, because the photographer executed this shot with dark and perfect vision.

wow, everything you've said is extremely pleasant to know for me as an artist. i'm sure the model will be happy too. and i was actually ready for comparison with certain movie you've mentioned, although nobody mentioned it before if i remember correctly. anyway, i wanted to show a whole different night-time story and i was happy with the result. i'm happy i wasn't alone.

Thanks for your feedback! I like giving dA artists more than a wimpy comment every now and then, especially on a work as powerful as this one. The rest of your gallery is beautiful, by the way. You are very original and talented, and I'm glad I stumbled across your page.

Fantastic photo, it definitely makes me think about pain. All I can think is that the girl in this image has suffered some sore of horrible tragedy, but has retaken her power and is going to make those who harmed her pay.Β

First off, in response to your statement that people want nothing but happiness in their images:

Despair, drama, and uncertainty is part of life, like it or not, and we will all take the good with the bad, regardless of how hard we try to avoid it or what our hearts desire; these things will find us all. Friends, family, your neighbors, and everyone you know and love will eventually die. One by one, day by day, until all that is left are ashes. That being said, I feel you should work and focus on what's "right" for you, and if that wanders into the realm of sadness, darkness, or the dramatic, then so be it.

An honest critique is just that, regardless of the subject matter. Opinions shouldn't matter. With my opinion on everyone else's opinion clearly stated (heh), onto the critique:

The crows in the background are in the perfect position, and the texture of the sky and the background has enough going on to give it a subtle nuance, but is neither overwhelming and busy nor blank and lacking in contrast. It ties into the image nicely and adds to an excellent shot. The anonymity achieved by obscuring the model's face with her hair and the shadows lends itself to imagination, where the viewer isn't tied to the image of one particular individual and can imagine it being truly anyone. The delicate curves of her hips give an image that would otherwise appear gloomy a tincture of both beauty and strength. The subtle contrast of that soft skin stands out just enough from the rest of the overall photo and offsets the distinct lines of the fingertips and the crows overhead. The vignette is a great final touch, adding darkness and defining borders on a shot that would otherwise not have them and leave the mind to wander. It also directs the focus of the viewer into the center of the shot, where it is met with darkness. The eye wanders out and around the perimeter of the photo to the crows, traveling across the arms and trailing down the unnaturally long fingertips, to the legs, and back to the face. It really gave me pause to stop and think, which would be why I'm writing this critique.

I feel that the object of really good photography, or any art for that matter, is to evoke a response in the beholder without the use of shock factor. You pulled that off nicely here. Well done.

This one reminds me of Rusalka too! Funny thing you mention Minor Key. I am a Music Major... and in one of my classes we had to write some melody... anyway... I used minor Key and not everyone (especially here in Texas where everyone is so damn fucking country and red neck) appreciates the beauty of Minor Key in music... I got some weird ass looks and snobbish comments... Oh and I especially have a great love for harmonic minor. Anyways I love what you do Kostas. It's amazing!

Ah, a wraith that rises from the water... If she was ever human, there is nothing human left in her now. What I see, anyway. The crows, less flocking to her, than disturbed, crying in warning, unsettled by some sense of thing rendered asunder... But that would go against the title, wouldn't it?

Beautifully eerie, undeniably with overtones of the macabre, however it's considered...

This is amazing! Both the model and the photographer have made this so stunning and I can't stop looking at it! It's addictive!

It's so beautiful but with a very dark side! To me it looks like she is something incredibly evil that has finally escaped from the water to terrorize the people of the the town behind her. Crows are normally portrayed as spies so to me it's like she is calling them to her so they see her and fly around the nearest town as a warning that she is on her way to burn the fear into the people even more.

Maybe I should stop watching so many horror movies :3

I get so bored with the world and its conformists.

are those crows photo manipulated in or are you just some really under appreciated god of photography?

either ways I love how the fingers are elongated. this is a great fucking piece.a
