Especially since it's still flooded even after you drain the moat...and the water is purple like that toxic gas found in the mine

Yeah I liked Sunshine a lot bettter, but overall I didn't like the toll booth collectathon the Super Mario series had, much preferred the Super Mario Bros. way of doing things.

And in my case, the first platformers I was introduced to was the Donkey Kong country series, so collecting things was not a big deal for me. My first Mario Game was Donkey Kong [Gameboy version] also 83

Yeah while the first I played was Super Mario Bros. the first game I REALLY played was Sonic & Knuckles and SMB3.
I dunno, I prefer collection to be like Yoshi's Island, like if you want to fine, but you're not forced to.
Sunshine did it better because each shine felt like the end of an episode in an over-arching plot (and damn F.L.U.D.D. is fun)
but yeah, I personally prefer point A to B and maybe C platformers rather than replay the level a bunch to progress to the rest of the game.

well that makes sense...On that note, Sunshine was kind of hard for me to follow, possibly because the world you were in was so large that I lost track of the objectives easily
your dislike of replay levels is not uncommon, a lot of less popular games involve you going back and forth through the same areas for different objectives...mainly because there's only 6 hours of gameplay and the developer is trying to stretch it to 11
