My theory is that the lad is supposed to reach spiritual strength, represented by the Azazel symbol. He is in a form of dreamscape together with the sign. He could just walk up to it, but there are webs of confusion (red) and weakness (blue), or the mix of them: despair (black). There is also a flaming tree at the end of these obstacles, which has to be climbed, but, as the tree is burning, it would take the opposite of all the elements of the previous obstacles to overcome it (that's why the air around the tree is white, it's radiated with the positive energy that the man has brought with him. 
So, that summed up, when one reaches the top of the tree, the sign is nowhere to be found, for the journey to find it was the goal itself.
