Don't know why, but this picture make me sad for some reason.
I think it's the remote looking setting, a country side where a petroleum pump that doesn't work (*or just forgotten*) and these two characters are enjoying themselves there.
It's joyful but also sad to me. But eh, that's just me looking at the drawing.

No it is working, the whole idea is that the 2 of us are using it's motion as a see-saw or teeter totter (whichever you happen to call it).

With that in mind this looks more happy then.
Hmm, kinda prefer the sad feeling an abandoned place tho. Again just me.

ponies have probably found some better resource than petroleum, so the old pumps are just abandoned and became part of the old landscape.

We began utilizing petroleum irl for the purpose of liquid fuel, obviously primarily to power individual wheeled automobiles, shipping trucks and construction&mining equipment, and eventually aircraft, because as opposed to ponies, we're weak, can't fly, and don't have magic powers to levitate and assemble things. Ponies can cover every angle with their own natural abilities across the 3 pony kinds; they're naturally strong, even non-earth ponies, 1/3 ponies can fly, and the remaining 1/3 have magic powers.
The only thing that truly inconveniences them is extremely long-distance travel, for which obviously they have the oldest, most reliable form powered transport, trains. Their trains, we've seen, are traditional coal-fired steam engines, which despite what most people think could actually be designed to safely travel over 120mph.
The only other thing we use petroleum for is to synthesize countless substances and materials that make modern quality of life possible, but all those same things could also be made from coal or natural gas as well, it's just making them from oil is a lot easier and takes less industrial effort.
From what I've been able to see, most of their electricity seems to be hydro-powered, and some places i.e. appleoosa actually don't have any power. Excess power needs I assume they have standard coal-fired power stations for, given, of course, that coal is the only of the 3 fossil hydrocarbons we've seen them utilizing, and is also the easiest of the 3 to get a hold of since most seems and deposits are always very near to surface level or often even exposed, vs either oil or gas which typically are in rocktraps a mile deep or deeper that you have to set up a lot of infrastructure and drill for.
This piece was just commissioned for fun between me and my friend pictured in it, nothing to do with anything I actually think about in the mlp universe
