Something like that is probably involved - or they really are all clones...
I like to think that there is an enchantment on the armor that changes their colors whenever they put it on.

The mane is part of the helmet and the tail is fake. Their naturals of both have to be short shorn.

But Flash Sentry gets special treatment because Equestria girls is composed of plot holes like narrative chain mail.

In regards to the last part, I mean, come on, they're just reused guard vectors, all of them are. I doubt they'd have to have a certain look about them besides the uniform. Shining Armor is an exception as well. He may have a white coat, but his mane and tail are far darker than the normal blue.
And in the Crystal Empire, the guy that came in only 10 seconds into the first part took off his helmet. The hairs may be fake, but his mane had legit blue and teal color to it.

I only wish guards in Royal Wedding episode wouldΒ act the way as on this image, because mane 6 beat up 100 changelings, and what hundreds of Royal Guards did ?
Disappeared or got tied up without even seconds screen time of battle.
Another funny think, in Equestia Girl episode, you can see few guards patroling, but the moment Twilight follow Sunset Shimmer, all of the sudden all guards are on coffee break, lol.

I just love this! I've always had a thing for the guards, you did an awesome job with the armor and I love how his horn is shinning, plus as usual the lighting is fantastic! This has got to be one of my favorites so far!

Yes, the background is very minimalistic. Actually I spend about two hours working on a real background for him, but it turned out not to make any sense and IΒ kicked it out for this one in the end.
