Well, we know that Earth Ponies are just as magical as the other races; their magic is simply turned mostly inward and gives them greater strength and endurance. Β You would think that that would make them ideal royal guards for the princesses.
My head cannon is that Earth ponies are the most peaceful and non-violent of the primary pony races. Β Their simply isn't much allure in a military occupation for the gentler giants.
Military work makes sense for the other pony types though: Β
Pegasi descend from a warrior race from before Equestria was created and that is why they make up the bulk of the Royal Guard.
Unicorns seem to value titles and bringing glory and prestige to their names, thus rising in ranks within a military career makes a lot of sense for them.
Earth Ponies simply lack much incentive to join the military. Β To them, standing at doors for hours at a time guarding a princess who is several times more powerful than you are when there's work to be done and during peace times would probably seem like a tremendous waste of time and effort. Β They would likely prefer to show their patriotism in the kitchen preparing a fantastic meal for the princesses to enjoy or something to that effect. Β Earth Ponies seem to generally be a very piratically minded bunch. Β All that being said, I would very much enjoy seeing at least one or two earth ponies among the ranks. Β I'm sure that they would make for proverbial juggernauts when encased in a suit of full-plate mail.

Well, probably serving as surveillance and commando ground based squads like Navy Seals style? S3 opener starts off with a (not sure what rank) Earth Pony stallion guard busting through the gates to give Celestia the news.
Man~ I really want to make that joke with 12 and 11 that leads to something said at 17 to 16 xD
But I'll keep that one to myself!

anyhoo, the guards seriously need an episode for themselves. if one of the cast is a guard could make the story interesting

There's like one earth pony guard... and he was stuck sitting at a train station watching the frozen northern wastes with no expectation of anything ever happening. Dude is really lucky the Crystal Empire returned.

This was easily one of the easiest sketch pages of yours to fave, even had to rethink a moment before I remembered this belonged in the "Sketches" folder, they're so cute/epic/generally emotion inducing. Very glad to see the guard ponies getting some love, they have so much potential. What personalities are hidden behind those stoic, uniform faces? Also, your take on how a frightened Night Guard would look is very interesting. So that is actually their mane? Hmm... oh dear I'm theorizing again. Sorry!
