FAQ
Q: the TEXTURES were applied to the model in [insert your 3d application] but appear not to fit right on (they appear to be all over the mesh with some black patches).
A: depending on your software it may be necessary to flip the textures horizontally.

Q: When smoothing the model (before or during the rendering ) the TEXTURES become jagged and small black spots appear in some places.
A: This is caused when the uv's get smoothed with the mesh. just disable the uv smoothing in the appropriate options.

Im not the Artist but you or the artist dont actually own any right to use the likeness of ponies for any reason. The artist could grant you permissions for his models but its still against the law to use them in any way for financial gain which a Ad or commercial Media is. Fan art is usually fine with most companies. To get outside of likeness stipulations as layed out by copy right laws you have to be 12% different than the original ,Just FYI.

The body was made in Maya and Zbrush - I used Zspheres in Zbrush for the initial base object. But that could have been done in Maya as well.
There should be tutorials around that show how to create a character "out of a box"

So first of all, I'm incredibly new to 3D modeling, so I apologize if this is an obvious/stupid question, but when I try to import any .obj into Blender it mentions a problem with a .mtl file. What should be done in this event?

The mtl file is used to assign the textures to the obj mesh.
You can still assign the textures manually when it is not available.

Nice job! Hopefully I can find a way to get them to work in Element 3D. Speaking of which, are the legs/face/mane/tail separate layers, so I can animate them individually (i.e. make the model walk, tail wave up and down, wings flap, etc.)?
