This is probably my favourite manip from your gallery so far. It is really excellent, almost nothing could be done to make it better, but I will suggest something nonetheless. The mountains in the distance look really cool, but they could use more texture, perhaps just a slight indication of rocks, because they can appear like a simple cut-out with a gradient fill eventhough I suspect they are real photos of rocks but extermely faded. So if there is some action layer over a picture of rocks maybe decreasing the upper layer for a few percents would do the trick. I would maybe add some sky or clouds for the final background, just an indication to make it more natural, because this also looks like a simple gradiant fill. The last thing I noticed is the horse, it could have a slightly bigger shadow and perhaps its hooves could be a bit erased so it would appear that his legs are in the grass, not just over it.

Haha your favourite manip from my gallery is not my,
is from who created the tutorial... i'm sad now

Uhm this is weird... can't you see texture in the mountains
that are in distance? There are slighty texure in all of them hehe

About your suspects... yes, all are photos of mountains, and not,
there aren't any gradient fill used to create deep of field in the mountains.
this manip only has on gradient in the final adjust, to do a sligthy vignette.

This manip is maked over a white background. The mountains have their opacity
decreased to get a feeling of deep of view. And the fog is a grey solid color
adjustment layer with a mask filled with black. Then, the fog was being revealed
painting with a white soft and low opacity brush over the mask.

It's an amazing step-by-step practice if you ask me, and you will be able to do these tricks in your own work in no time. I do get the feeling that there are textures in the background mountains, but I didn't know what tools were used to achieve that, because I didn't check the tutorial first. Still, the mountains could be more visible.
