krigl — Staring at the clock

Description Yesterday I made another attempt to teach my daughter, who is very 'learning resistant', how to tell the time. She just stood for ages, staring at the clock without speaking, as she always does... it's so frustrating, especially as I am a teacher... failure and annoyance.

Yesterday evening I tried to use trap tiling with UF for the first time for the Hidden Dimensions Gallery challenge 5 and I couldn't make head or tail of all the complex mess of slots in the Orbit Traps plugin thingy. I just kept staring at it, and at the example fractal and couldn't work out what went where, what it did, nothing. Too...complex.... does....not... compute....

It suddenly hit me that this is how my daughter feels, staring at the clock and unable to comprehend what is right in front of her face.

Anyway... eventually my head cleared and I made this. I wanted to do something (relatively) simple and it turned out okay, though there are some ugly scratchy lines in there. It's a start, anyway.

Can she tie her shoe laces?

I HATE technical stuff. It's mainly why I can't do Apo.

More or less... she just doesn't like learning. She likes creating
I'm not technical either...

Maybe it will change with time. Some children start late.
My younger son hated practising his guitar as a child but now he loves making music on the computer.

I used to hate going out for walks with my parents... but now I wish my family were keener on spending time in the countryside....

When I was small I was so frightened during walks in the countryside. If we went into long grass I thought there would be insects to touch my legs. Ugh!
I wasn't very strong either and got tired easily.
Now it's very different. I love walking but my legs protest especially if it's hot.

In the Czech Republic there are ticks lurking in the long grass, some of which are infected with encephalitis. Best to keep out....
Yes, walking is no fun when it's boiling...

Yes, there are ticks alongside our river too and we have stopped taking the dogs there.
I tried to get one of them vaccinated but she was really very ill and suffered a lot. They are treated externally instead.

Ticks are nasty things...

I was foggy headed for years and complex math and science problems could not cut through the fog. Finally, when I was around age 20, the fog just cleared and everything began to make sense. We are all so different. She may be a little fog-headed for a while. If this is the case, the fog will clear. Just be patient.
BTW, I like the jagged edges.

I do hope you're right! Thanks for the encouragement... she is getting better slowly...

Your daughter will get it. I just know it. I had a hard time with clocks when I was a child. It takes getting use to, but it will work. Hang in there!

I hope so....although it's more when than whether that I'm worried about. She should already know this stuff at her age...she's going to get so left behind soon...

Some people are just teaching-resistant because they prefer to learn on their own, don't be desperate at all. There's still hope
And you did a nice thing here. Love the fluffs, just the background is a little too "off" for the strange colours and rough textures. The rest is okay!

Ah yes... what would you have done with the background? I may change it if it's within my powers...

I think changing the colours alone would do plenty. If you're not very keen on using only the algorithm prescribed by the challenge you could also add some pixel formula background + SFBM (either General or II) or Perlin Noise, which make good smooth textures. You can also make the flowers a little bigger so that they can cover more of the picture.

Yes... I was thinking just that about using 'pixel abstracts' as backgrounds. In fact any output could be used as a background. I shall experiment further... I'm having trouble with this trap tiling thingy though, I need to tame it before moving on further. My computer is slowing everything down too...arrgh!
Thanks again!

Heheh, don't worry, you'll eventually get the hang of it. Good luck again, you're welcome!

Thanks for the comments!
At the moment I'm concentrating more on the ways of doing stuff in UF. Later I hope to get more artistic and try to make balanced, harmonious pictures... or maybe not. I like CHAOS!!
