Description "Trained"

This was my very first Transformers: Mosaic piece I ever did, late 2007. I never got around to posting the coloured piece here (just the lineart) and I finally remembered to today xD

So this is OLD work from 2007, not a new piece.

Yup! Its based in the early issues of the IDW comics (probably around the 2006-2007 issues)

Sweetness ^^ I've only just started watching G1 with my younger siblings, and, although it's an older cartoon, I love it! Old cartoons are the best

lol thankya actually that one was fully cel-rendered lines from 3D models I built (but coloured afterwards in Macromedia Flash).

I haven't done cel-rendering in a long long time as it takes a LONG time, much faster to just do thing by hand now :-P

But I hope to get back to cel-rendering at some point as I plan on using it for whenever I get around to doing art of the Movie Transformers (as soon as I figure them out, lol)

thanks, dude

whenever/if I can sort out where my DVD with them on it are I can email em to ya. They're really quite crap compared to yours though xD Even now when I do them they're all just about creating the silhouettes I want (not many details anymore, those all get drawn now) just to sorta "block out" where everything goes and the camera angles. But you're welcome to take a look at the ol' cel-render-readys as soon as i find em :-P

No rush dude! It'd be cool to see how ur models are done - They're really expressive nad dynamic - something I struggle with sometimes. Anyways - I wanna see some more cg-ish stuff soone - break out the Ironhide and the Rumble/Frenzy models!!!

lol funny thing is that I moved away from the full cel-rendered stuff because it took too long, but I've found that cel-rendering like that is the ONLY feasable way for me to do the one thing I have not yet figured out how to do:

Movie Transformers

I dont want them as INSANELY detailed as they are, but not so over simplified that they don't look like the movie bots, but still being "my take/style" on the movie bots. But there's still too much in the movie bots that hand drawing would be too hellish to keep it consistent. So it looks like the cel-rendering shall return for them!

btw, you needs to get more of those (the name eludes me, im sorry) "your" characters done those look AMAZING. Is that going to be like a comic or something?

I think u can leave the Bayformers alone *cough-theysuck-cough*

Actually - I'd like to see ur take on them. I think they'd be rockin'.

My personal project is currently called (for the moment) 'KARUKAI', and there is more stuff coming soon dude - just been so busy at work, that when i get home i just wanna eat and sleep And yeah... it's goings to be SOMETHING... heh heh heh

KrisSmithDW In reply to kurisama [2008-10-01 00:32:54 +0000 UTC]

lol but i love the movie bots, pfft xD

but yeah, its been a challenge trying to figure out how to approach em. Still want them to look like the movie bots, but with my personal approach :-P

yes, as soon as you get free time plz get more Karukai done, the design aesthetic on these are amazing!!

I still gotta get a self-pubbed series of my own going at some point. 2 concepts that just are begging for release (and to be organized from the mess, lol) Tried my hand at a webcomic a few years back, but that'll get reworked now that its long gone from the 'tubes.

some people say that you have a better chance of making money selling collections of a webcomic you'eve established for free because you have a built audience by that time. and that if you go straight to print minus free webcomic, you actually will make less because people wont buy something "untested".

Then there's the other camp that says if you post it for free NO ONE will buy it, but most research I've done says webcomic first may be the way to go for a better fan-base and more chance of moneys.

decisions decisions!

kurisama In reply to KrisSmithDW [2008-10-02 23:02:39 +0000 UTC]

I can see the reasoning of that. Hm, difficult choice indeed. Which brings the question - where do u start with ur web-comic? Do u start at origin, and when u print - continue the story or print from the beggining again?

I can see ppl not wanting to buy what they have already seen... Hm...

KrisSmithDW In reply to kurisama [2008-10-04 10:22:52 +0000 UTC]

well, i've been doing some more research as of yesterday (BEFORE Silent Hill possessed me, lol) and the conclusion I keep coming to, in the indie market, is just to do collections of the free online comic. Basically like TPBs. Don't collecte like every 22 pages/1 issues worth, wait till you have like 3 issues worth or a whole arc and as the next arc starts up, publish a collection of the previous arc and so one and so-forth. As you build a loyal audience many of them will want physical collections, moreso as you have built that audience by then. In the "indie" sorta world there is a much higher percentage of people wanting to support what they like, so there's a chance there. But you just keep keepin' on and collect the arcs like a "special edition". Another suggestion is to pack the collection full of exclusive stuff you WONT get online. Some more new pages in between, maybe a new mini-chapter, maybe some behind the scenes stuff and other stuff that will NOT be put online.

but yeah, most people ive talked to said if you arent with a publisher and wanting to do it yourself, free webcomic + collections is the way to go. You wont make much money to start anyways, so its best to build an audience you can interact with and get to that point as it progresses. People like to "try before they buy" sometimes, ESPECIALLY in indie-pubs be it comics or music.

But thats what I've been seeing from all the research on the subject I've done. I hope that jumble made sense, i'm not thinking clearly atm xD

Well that makes sense! We should meld our minds together and do something...

I like the idea of doing a TPB style book with a whole arc and goodies, I myself love to buy those TPB's!

I just need to build up a fanbase! I should get off my ass and do more art (I've been doing a lot of plastic model making with paints and stuff! I'm currently making one of these babies: [link] )

U're definately doing the right research, and I suspect we will will chat more about this...

KrisSmithDW In reply to kurisama [2008-10-09 08:08:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, the classic Valkyrie, can't ever forget it

But yeah, TPBs/graphic novels are the new hotness. The MAIN sticking point is that a lot of people don't want to buy indie comics because they either get cancelled or the creator has to give up mid-way through the story, it never gets resolved, and the readers feel like they wasted their money. In the web comic/future TPB style of doing things, the readers dont pay a DIME until there is a FULL COMPLETE story worth collecing. And people LOVE TPBs nowadays, especially on shelves xD I'd say start getting stuff sorted out and do it as webcomic, like PRONTO, yo.

I'm heavily HEAVILY considering getting at least ONE of my 2 properties up and running when I go on holidays next month. One is an unnamed action/adventure sci-fi/fantasy do-whatever-i-feel-like-at-that-moment sorta series that I'm still sorting out/designing. The other, my priority, my BABY, is called "Welcome to Birkwood" is based on these characters I've had since I was little (that have grown up with me) and it is, well, FUCKED UP xD It's pretty much the story of 2 cousins (Mike and Tom) living in a town (loosely based on my own) trying to forge their own destinies in defiance of, well, everything, and its basically their lives and that of their close associates stickin' it to society and just doin' their own thing. Basically tons of swearing, offensive humor, and anti-establishment-ish stuff. Basically a fucked up comic for people just as screwed up as me with the same sick sense of humour :-P

I'll end up doing both at some point, but Welcome to Birkwood is like my BABY so It HAS to get done. It was once a webcomic a couple years ago (no longer on the net, webhost long gone) that I never got very far with, but I'm reworking it for the new series, hopefully it attracts some very sick people to read it xD

that... that was a much longer comment than I was planning xD

I've also had this idea floating on my head for YEARS! It needs to see the light of day!

lol no probs, I thought it was dA's fault (everyone ELSE that missed any messages from me was dA's fault lol) but anyways.

I had like a LONG research and "journey of self" thing and I'm decided im going to start on Welcome to Birkwood REAL soon. Might as well, not like you can actually read the old webcomic anymore seeing as the host site is LONG dead, lol

Just got the final new head designs of the 4 lead characters done so i'm actually getting at least somewhere. Ain't much (just heads) but if you wanna see em for shits n giggles I can email em to ya if you want.

Hopefully I can start to get a bit done when I go on holidays next month, or at least start on it.

Especially since the 2 MAIN characters have been with me since I was like 10 years old (jezus, 17 years now ive had em and barely done anything, i SUCK xD ) i REALLY need to get em going. Everyone I know has always liked em and wants to see me do something with em, so might as well throw my cards in now while I can.

I don't watermark, I don't know if I should, I just click the creative commons licence thingie.

maybe i'll do that or my old webcomic warning "don't even fucking THINK of stealing this" xD

either way, i just gotta remember to put down that the comic will have to be mature warning-ed due to the constant swearing/off-colour comments (my friends used to joke that I couldn't go 1 page without the word "fuck" showing up somewhere in the dialogue" and sometimes violence, lol. Yah, its not for everyone xD I still don't even know what to put down to describe the series. "a bunch of people do stuff"? xD
