In my opinion, I think grounding your concepts will help bring everything together. Added some type of cast shadow as well as an occlusion shadow (I've noticed you add cast shadows occasionally, but rarely occlusion shadows, which is the one that really grounds the object). Overall I really like seeing all the experimenting with the concepts layout/design. Good work!

Sorry to butt in, but could you tell me what occlusion and cast shadows are? They sound pretty important and I'm trying to learn all I can.

There the shadows that are the very darkest, they aren't very noticeable, but there the ones that make a figure/object feel grounded. For example put your hand flat on your table, the occlusion shadow is the dark shadow that is made between your hand and the table. Hope it helps some ^^

Now this is really cool! I think adding the extra details was a good idea, it certainly adds more life to the picture as a whole, without overshadowing the actual characters. Really well done
