Uno dei pochi disegni di paleoart che ho fatto esclusivamente per mio diletto. Risale alla metà del 2006 e ritrae i tre più grandi Carcharodontosauridi allora conosciuti. Da sinistra a destra:
• Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, diffuso in Nord Africa tra 110 e 90 milioni di anni fa era lungo oltre 13 metri;
• Giganotosaurus carolinii, diffuso in Argentina circa 95 milioni di anni fa, era lungo oltre 13 metri;
• Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, diffuso in Nord America circa 110 milioni di anni fa, era lungo oltre 12 metri;
L'omino che scappa è un omaggio a Godzilla...

One of the few paleoart plates I made only for my pleasure.
It's dated back to 2006 and shows the three biggest Carcharodontosaurids known at that time.
From left to right:
• Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, lived in Northern Africa between 110 an 90 million years ago and was over 13m/43ft long;
• Giganotosaurus carolinii, lived in Argentina more or less 95 million years ago and was over 13m/43ft long;
• Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, lived in North America more or less 110 million years ago and was over 12m/40ft long;
The stampeding man is an homage to Godzilla movies...

In this case, I guess neither.
Theropod "hands" were very different from ours, and no theropod that I know (with the possible exception of Troodon) had fingers that were "good" at "grasping": theropod fingers could bend "upwards" (towards the back of the hand) way better than they could bend "downwards" (towards the palm).
And for their arms, the story is more or less the same: Tetanurae didn't have nimble arms. Their arms were strong but quite "stiff", because they were made to hold and "hook" to living and fighting preys who weighed several tons. Movement at the shoulder was fairly limited and – as you may know – even elbows and wrists were not a glaring example of mobility (the old matter of theropod hands "supination VS pronation"...).
When speaking of big theropods' arms, you should always consider that their "hand" of choice was their mouth: that's quite logical if you think about what means to have a "hand" that's about a meter long, has tenths of big sharp teeth, and sits at the end of a neck that can lift a couple of tons.

Penso che oggi possa risultare alquanto datata a livello di ricostruzioni, ma come disegno a me piace ancora oggi.
L'omino che scappa era un modo per dare un riferimento dimensionale senza usare la solita sagomina banale...

Che peccato che il tuo Carcharodontosauro non sia mai apparso su uno dei tuoi libri, perché è molto bello.

Non c'è stata occasione per inserirlo nei libri.
Diversi anni fa avevo fatto un bozzetto – mai concluso – per una illustrazione con Carcharodontosaurus, e la colorazione che avevo scelto era a larghe strisce terra bruciata su una base giallo crema, un po' simile al Mostro di Gila. Il contrasto era molto forte... se dovessi farlo oggi non saprei, la scelta dei colori a volte mi richiede alcune ore di prove e "meditazione".

Una domanda che mi faccio da sempre: chi era più grande fra il Giganotosaurus e il Carcharodontosaurus?

Difficile dirlo in realtà, perchè Carcharodontosaurus è anche più frammentario di Giganotosaurus. Credo fossero grossomodo della stessa taglia (quindi attorno ai 13 metri di lunghezza), ma non mi sono mai dedicato in modo approfondito al ragazzone africano, quindi non saprei darti una risposta che vada oltre alle stime attualmente esistenti.

Si parla di campioni molto frammentari per entrambi, e per il momento credo sia più saggio dire che sono entrambi la stessa taglia; chi dice che uno era più lungo dell'altro, sta travisando i fatti.
