This is actually a revisit of something I created long ago. The original could never really be posted because it was created in gmax, which doesn't allow you to render your work.

This is based off of an object from the computer game Myst. The object was originally found in the Stoneship Age of Myst on Sirrus' desk. The original object behaved the same, though didn't really look that great due to the game's age. For some reason I always liked the original object in Myst (which would animate when you clicked on it). Despite it's age, Myst has always been an inspiration for my 3D work, probably because I first played it when I was 8 or 9.

I experimented with some interesting things for this. For instance, I wanted to make the wooden block textured to appear as a solid block when together, despite being 4 separate blocks. It took a little bit of work, and it's not exactly perfect, but I like it (you could tell that it's a little off if you had a close up on the top of the block... the grain doesn't line up correctly).

Next, I tried making the reflection in the glass blurry (just a slight settings tweak). I thought this better represented a solid glass ball than a sharp reflection did.

Last, the sponge paint pattern on the wall is based off of how my mom painted the bathroom at our old house. My version really doesn't do it justice, as mine looks like it really was done with a sponge. My mom's version was done with a rag and some darker blue paint against the existing light blue wall. It was done so well that it looked like it was wallpaper or something and not hand-painted. If I had had a reference picture to work with when I did this, I would have tried to make it closer to the original paint. Maybe I'll track one down in the future and make a new texture map out of it.

Also, I've recently realized that wood and glass are apparently my two favorite textures to give things... not sure why exactly.

I want to put it on loop or something to watch over and over and over and over again. It's fun!
