Description
Ahaha, I'm sorry for being so inactive again; things have gotten busy at school and stuff. But I've been working diligently during the little free time I got and here is the result!I'm fairly happy with how it came out, though it could be better, I think, especially the smoke. It came out...not quite as it was supposed to - I wanted it to be more gradienty and flowy, but I still have no idea how to achieve that effect with watercolours, ahaha.
The character pictured is one I thought up myself; he's a part of a... sort of a story I'm thinking up, yeah. I'm not gonna bore you guys with the details, because who cares, yes? Basically, his name's Bartholomew and he owns an oriental-styled shop in 19th century Scotland. Hooray.

Życzę więcej takich ( i lepszych! ) prac

Ślicznie dziękuję za miły komentarz (: Muszę przyznać, takiej interpretacji się nie spodziewałam, co nie znaczy że nie jest ona mile widziana!

This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the bright colours on his robe... dealy... thing. The smoke is amazing! It's what I'm always trying to get with smoke. Wow. Just... really well done! Bravo!
(Also, I am now terribly curious about the story!)

Oh my, thank you for such a nice comment! I'm grinning like a madman now. C:
For the smoke, I covered the outside of the lines with masking liquid and then filled the inside with paint, mixed with a lot of water...Then I quickly dried it with a tissue, and repeated the same process, covering a smaller and smaller area to make the gradient. I hope that will be of any help to you (:
Eheheh, about the story... It's more of a backstory for my characters and not only is it pretty much in the works, but it's connected heavily to the stories of other, still unintroduced, characters. So it might not make the most sense now, but in essence, the shop this guy here owns is involved in some illicit proceedings - as in selling information, blackmail and eventually murder - most orchestrated by his elder brother, with whom he has a quite strained, and at times abusive relationship and acts very passive-aggressive towards. He doesn't play a central role in the...main events, actually and if it were a book or something, he's be a secondary or even more minor character, but I find him very fun to draw (except that goddamn robe) nevertheless. :3

Haha, you're very welcome! 8D
Oooh, I'm definitely going to have to try that the next time I pull my watercolours out! Thanks so much! 8D
And wow, that sounds super interested - I've always like the stories with shops selling interesting things, between xxx-Holic and Petshop of Horrors and Little Shop of Horrors and so forth, so if you ever start writing that out, or feel like showing us more characters, I would love to see it/them/whatever. (And even if you hate to draw that robe, the results you've gotten here are amazing! )

Good luck (: I'm sure it will come out very nice!
xxxHolic? I know that title! ;D I used to read it regularly, then I got somewhat disinterested and stopped; Yūko was awesome, though!
Ah, I would love to finally introduce all of my characters one day! Sadly, it'll most likely take some time... For fanart, the characters are all well-known already, through games, shows and all that; if one's familiar with them, the design would catch one's ete even with simpler pictures with less effort behind them. For original characters, they don't have that sort of support, so I would like them to be introduced through solid, full-effort pictures, like this one; that way they have a higher chance to grab attention and become memorable. At least that's what I think. And for full-blown pictures to be made, I need both time and inspiration, something that can be hard to...come across, ahaha. (:

Yeah, I know what you mean about OCs needing to be more solid in their depictions. When I first started drawing my OCs, and no one knew them, I was very careful every single time. Now tho', I mostly draw for my partner's and my own amusement, so I put a lot less effort in. XD
But yeah, time and inspiration are a bit flighty aren't they? Especially when you're working and taking classes, and making time for friends and family and every other little thing... I haven't drawn seriously in a good month or so now. I'll sit down with the intention of starting something and then just... either not saving the file (if I'm working digitally) or just flipping the page if I'm working traditionally.

Yes, exactly. (: Though I'd say all those quick, low-effort pictures are important as well; they can really help smooth out the design and make it work better.
I think that's the problem most artists have (: I tend to start many pictures I don't finish, either the inspiration fizzles out or I notice too many mistakes and don't bother to finish the piece anymore. Honestly, I'm kind of jealous of those people who can churn out two, three full-blown pictures a day, a week even! But then...I remind myself that art is not a race and it's better to make one picture you enjoy than five you forced yourself to finish. I guess I wouldn't make a good commission artist, ahaha~

And they make sure that your character looks like the same person every time you draw them. Each of my characters has about one really obvious thing about them, and when I'm drawing quickly I have to make sure to emphasise those.
yeah, that's exactly how it is! I'm also a bit jealous of them. I've been at work on one drawing for a friend for about three or four weeks how. I'm really liking it, but still... Three weeks!

I care - give me all the details! (But seriously, I'm a sucker for characters with stories, and Victorian characters over that - especially ones who're so well drawn. )

I-I'm really glad to hear that (: I hope I haven't set your expectations up too high, though! - the story is pretty much still in the work and is very closely ties with the stories of other, still unintroduced, characters. So it might not make very much sense right now, but I'll try to make it as non-confusing as possible!
Basically, the shop he owns is involved in some illicit proceedings -as in selling information, blackmail and eventually murder - most orchestrated by his elder brother, with whom he has a quite strained, and at times abusive relationship and acts very passive-aggressive towards. He is a very...two-faced person, if that's the right word for it - a calm, soft-spoken man with an air of mystery around him outside, and a much more cynical, condescending, vindictive and very emotion-driven one inside. This is a sharp contrast to the personality of his brother, who is outwardly extremely untactful, short-tempered and violent, but can be very level-headed and cunning when the situation calls for it.
Umm...so that's it, pretty much. I'll admit, writing all of this has helped me take a somewhat different point of view at my characters...So thank you very much for giving me this opportunity! : D

All that just makes me want to read more about them - and I'm glad I gave you the opportunity to do the character-discovery-via-writing-thing (it always helps me, when I'm starting new ones)
