Description I guess I'm on a bit of a spaceship trip lately... This is loosely inspired by the book Hyperion, although the tree-ship there is a whole other animal.

Now that. That is cool. Especially the exhaust in its purpleness. So cool. Love all the motion.

I've actually done a bunch of thumbnails in a sketchbook, dialing in on a design... Hopefully I have time to put it together.

Thanks! Yeah, definitely some of my favorite sci-fi.

Oh, I get what you mean! The original one had leaves and rotated, right? Yours is like a smoother/sleeker version than the one in the book. Ever think of drawing it just like the book? lol, that would take a while. I just love the shape and glow of the engines. When I think of the tree ship, I can help but tink of roots when I see the strands of light coming out of the engines.

Yeah, from what I understand in the book, those tree-ships were pretty much just trees with "Hawking drives" that powered them, whatever that means... Kinda crazy if you ask me, but eh, it's sci-fi.

lmao! I'm gonna write a book where you don't need to say "eh", you'll be like "oh...he actually explained it!" But I have to admit, I'm reading the book just for the fact that it has a freaking tree ship.

This is an very intriguing piece, which gives a more unique perspective on space travel. Actually, I like the ambiguity in what the ship might be made of, although I at first thought 'tree' later I wondered about 'rock' like some others who commented. I don't think plant life clinging to the outside is necessary, though it would be another interesting spin. Faved.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I kinda want to do another iteration of this at some point... Right now I feel like it's just a giant tree-stump with nonsensical fins floating in space, but I'm glad others find it interesting as is!

Well its a non commercial video that is basically a music video to a song, I show images of what is similar to what I see in my mind's eye when i listen to the song. Does that explain it for you?

totally awe inspiring-i've seen bio or organic type ships before-heck even i do them-with animal like patterns or scaling on them, but never anything like this before, with a wood look, brings a new meaning to the word driftwood, hehe, and yes the engine exhaust is equally cool.

This is just spectacular . The various exhaust ports are inspired. The texturing on the ship is detailed to just the right level. And I love the background, especially the ring around that planet.

I haven't been commenting on deviations lately...but I had to here!

But it really is a good work. And a very good design.

Delta-Hexagon [2009-12-31 17:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Actually when I first saw it it screamed stone to me instead of tree but hey, who am I to say? It could probably use some rogue strands of tree stuff, like roots or something, coming off in areas. Or maybe that would make it look like moss covered rock to me. Either way it looks awesome, and that exhaust, oh dear god that exhaust is bloody wicked. It looks like its making its own nebula in order to propel it forward. I like that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kryoth In reply to Delta-Hexagon [2010-01-02 00:23:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah, I could've done a better job of designing the ship to be more like a tree - the fins in particular don't make sense to me, and like you said, some stands/branches/etc. would've helped. Thank you very much for the feedback!

voidrunner [2009-12-31 06:26:40 +0000 UTC]

you really nailed the in-space-feel. i really dig the engine exhaust. it's pretty interesting. the ship itself has a lot of texture. if you ignore the bottom fins, it looks a lot like a tree. the swirling light of the nebula really sells the whole image.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kryoth In reply to voidrunner [2009-12-31 06:35:00 +0000 UTC]

Haha now that you mention it, the fins look really out of place here with a tree theme, oh well Thank you very much for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
