Well, technically, Zim isn't male OR female in human standards. He's only male in _Irken_ standards. According to Jhonen, Zim doesn't have the parts that human males do, so...yeah. >.>;

That does make sense... Ikens after all are not mammals, at a guess I'd say the catagory they fit best into if they originated on earth would be reptiles, so maybe internal reproductive organs? Like a snake?
If not then I wonder how Irkens tell what gender they are when they are born... aside from how all the females look like they are wearing heavy mascara...

I'd say reptiles, myself, only Irkens are apparently close in temperature to humans (seeing as Zim's temperature was deemed 'healthy' in Dark Harvest)... However, being warm-blooded isn't necessarily a strictly mammal thing. So, yeah, they're probably closer to reptiles (though there is only one known Earth reptile with warm blood, not including the possibility of some dinosaur species being endothermic), so it's likely that Irken reproductive organs would have been internal. I'm pretty sure they rid themselves of said organs entirely once cloning became mainstream in their society, though.
It wouldn't be hard at all to tell the gender of a newly born smeet; the females have curly antennae. I honestly doubt the 'eyelashes' are actually hair-like the way human eyelashes are, though; I'm pretty sure that's a mammal thing.
Of course, maybe we're all looking at this the wrong way. Perhaps, as they are completely alien, they'd be part of a totally different category that wouldn't fit into any of those existing in our animal kingdom.
