We have a park over here that's infamous for it's "attack" squirells. "Mine!"
(and the news media "freak out" over it. )

I was lucky, because usually there're no squirrels in the nearby park. And, when I took my camera with me, there was a real invasion!

They tested them for rabies but ultimately found none.
They would run up, scare the human, and then steal their food, and run away.
They wouldn't attack the people, so much as bounce off them.
It was a learned behavior by two or 3 squirrels, who had figured out how to get free goodies.

(And the squirrels here in California are a very drab gray compared to your squirrels.)
