Day 1: Spring

Finally, finally, their schedules lined up and they could see each other for more than just a quick cup of coffee or a late lunch. The weather seemed to be settling down as well, it would suddenly rain without any warning the past few weeks and now that it was calm for more than a day Autor had the bold idea that they should go out of town and enjoy it- he rang her after work to share his plan.

"I don't know, it might start raining," Rue said over the phone, her voice teasing. Autor grinned and chuckled, uncoiling his fingers from the phone wires. He found he had a habit of twisting the cord whenever they spoke. "Maybe we should just, wait until winter. Yes, of course, then there's sure to be no rain."

"Winter it is." He agreed. She laughed and gasped.
"No! I want to go, don't you dare cancel on me."
"I'm not cancelling- we're still going out tomorrow, I'd be a right idiot if I passed up any chance to see you." Gosh, his ears were hot. "But the winter as well then, and the fall, and the spring-"
"Autor!" Rue laughed, sounding flustered as well. They both laughed and then fell into a comfortable silence for a moment. Autor's fingers were back to curling up the phone line.
"I miss you." Rue sighed.
"I miss you, too." Autor responded quickly. "I can't wait to see you."
"Mmhmm." He could hear the smile in her voice. "We should get some sleep then." She said begrudgingly after another long pause, giving a tired sigh.
"Well, I could always come by tonight and we'll go out now-" He grinned as she laughed.
This was often how their talks went, almost hanging up but one or the other sneakily keeping the other on the line.
It was a summer spent mostly connected over the phone.
But it was summer that they still spent together, despite the distance, despite everything, and to them that was enough.

So there was a Rutor week (by FelixNFox) some months ago now. I'm finally trying to get to the sketches I made, and hey- some of them are happy! I think only one prompt made me go for a sad setting. Also, bikes are hard to draw, don't look too closely *cough* just uh, got with the bare amount of detail.
These two are cute, excuse the uh, odd drabble? I've not written much in a long while but could only picture the relief these two have at getting away together to go out and enjoy the summer while I was working on this. Anyways, here's hoping the rest of the prompts don't take me forever to fix up .w .;;
