I didn't get why he got a gold mask at that point when he would eventually permanently upgrade to a gold mask along with the other Toa later.

The means by which they upgraded to the gold masks wasn't nailed down and is actually one of the MNOG's points of diversion. The MNOG came up with "The gold masks were made by the Toa placing all of their masks on their Suva" because that's what the merchandise suggested - the original canister lids have six slots each for a mask to be mounted on a head, plus a molded Toa head in the middle for the gold mask, so...
