I did this in SAI, and apprently it's supposed to already be transparent. But I did that.

I think it's the goddamn v7 then. I've heard dA doesn't owrk with transparent images anymore. I'm hoping someone figures out how to fix that soon...I don't upload transparent pics, but if I ever want to I'd like the option.

if you did on a program with layers and drew above the background layer, then simply delete the background layer and make sure you save as a PNG file!! JPEG files dont support transparency ):

For a transparent BG the file should be a PNG. And All you do is delete the background layer (the white part)

What program are you using, and did you draw above the background layer or did you draw on it?

Anyway, you have to delete the first white layer, and when it asks how to save it, choose the opacity option. (Or maybe you just choose the opacity option- I always delete the first white layer though.)
