Some tips that got me started are start simple. Single Pony, or even just a face. Practice off an existing drawing/image. Once you get a handle on their shapes you can start changing them however you like. Using programs like Photoshop/Paint.net or Inkscape help too since you can go back and edit layers/shapes much easier(but they require quite a bit of learning).
