Description
AAHAHA! I'm so screwed~! I have a huge paper (graduation standard) due on Monday that I have yet to start on, yet here I am finished this. orz Save me...-----
Anyway, this is for ~raindance168 . Her Secret Santa failed to draw her anything, so I'm the replacement. 8D This is her character, Hibiki Shizuka. [link] [link]
I have no idea what I was trying to do with that fish, but whatever it was, it failed.
Sorry for butchering your character. I drew it at school with no references, so I unintentionally made his bangs too long. I also didn't notice he was 14 until I was done...
I hope you like it anyway. The hair was fun to draw and color. :D
-----
As a side note/question, are the pictures that I post too big? I have a relatively huge screen, so it looks okay to me. It probably overfills smaller monitors though...

I love the half-lidded look in the eyes as the fish comes into existence -- it makes this an enjoyable conjuration art!

Oh gosh, luffles. <3
This picture is too awesome for words. >w<
Or it could be that it's so late my conversational skills went down the drain and I don't know what to say. Though I really like it.

WOW! You did a really great job on this! The anatomy is better than what I do have the time *cough* 'Course, I tend to have the sort of CLAMP style... sort of... with the elongation of bodies, limbs, and faces...
But it is awesome! I like the expression he's wearing, very calm and somewhat dreamlike in my opinion.
To me it looks like you were trying to make it look like he was either creating or summoning the fish that's between his hands, just with the way the water around it is like.
I must ask, did you use a tablet to draw all this out? I know some use mouse, but I personally have no patience for that *very little patience, if any*

Thanks! The anatomy was actually quite screwed up on the sketch and the finished version. I went back and fixed it. His forearms were reaaally long. xD
Maybe that's what he was doing with the fish.
I first drew it in my sketchbook with a pencil. Then I scanned it into Photoshop and redrew the lines with a tablet. I use the mouse for putting down base colors, but I generally use the tablet for the actual coloring.
Do you use a tablet?

Anatomy tends to end up that way at first, I still have problems with it... unless I have photo references for the poses...
Is possible.
Ah ok. That seems an awful lengthy process to me, but then again I've done that too, but that was before I got my pretty new tablet from Amazon. Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet xD I love this thing.

Anatomy is a really tricky thing. You just have to really stick with the head measurements. I have trouble with actual poses too.
I'm pretty sure I'm doing way more work than need be. That explains why I take so long to get anything done. orz I have a Wacom too. Though not a Bamboo. Mine's a really old model.

Yeah, anatomy always has to give trouble in some form or another... usually with things like hands 'cause there's so many moving parts.
That could be it. Doing it that way is bound to take longer. A really old model? Like how old?

I've been really bad with hands, but then I randomly hit a high learning curve. o_O I think I draw fairly good hands now.
I suppose it's not too old of a model, but the tablet belonged to my brother before I got into the whole CGing stuff. It's been with me since around late '06.

That you did. They turned out well. Hands take a long time to figure out how to draw right. I still place the thumb wrong half the time...
So it's not too bad. As long as it's in good condition you won't have to replace it.

UWAA! Thank you so much! I like how you have adapted parts from both of the reference pictures, haha. I didn't expect to see the fish kimono, which was a really random choice on my part when I did that piece (notice how the hair ended up mimicking the tapered top fin?). I'm really amazed you drew this without references! You didn't butcher him at all, really. It's nice to see an OC in another person's style. I really like the eyes, they really glow. You drew the hands very elegantly as well. And I wouldn't worry about his age, because I can't really tell how old people are based off of looks, and I kind of randomly make up the age. I always ask my friends how old they think the character I was just drawing looks, and they said "mid to late teens" in Hibiki's case. Whatever you were doing with the fish, I don't think it particularly matters. In my case, I used the fish to help the viewer make the connection between the pattern of the kimono and the fish I used to design it. The bangs are fine, I just kind of assumed it was your style to draw them that way.
Anyways, thank you so much! I love how you have drawn him! Your digital skills are much better than mine (I haven't really done much CG stuff). The moorish idol is very cute .
Heh, I better work on the replacement SS pieces I promised to help with! *feels guilty*

The fish one was the first picture I saw of Hibiki. xD I really liked how you used that idea for "school". The fish kimono was also easier to remember, which was probably one of the main reasons why I could draw this without a reference.
I'm glad you like it. =] Your CGing is actually really good for someone who usually stays in the traditional media.
I should work on the other SS piece that I have to do as well... sooner or later... <_< >_>
You can critique it for mistakes if you want. By note or by comment works; whatever is easiest for you. It's always nice to know what mistakes other people can (or can't) see. I'll correct them if they're things I can easily fix. I know I myself find about a billion things wrong with my art but never fix it.

Haha, I think the kimono was the only thing that kept me from being eliminated in the first round of the contest I did that piece for.
I hardly have time to practice CG these days. Because I have to work on artwork for school, it is best for me to work with traditional media. My teacher likes to see what we're working on, and he often has advice that is best given while we are working on the piece. I also don't feel like dragging a desktop to school just for art class, haha.
I finally got replies from everyone I sent notes to about the SS situation, so I can actually start, yay!
Okay, critique (already said the things I like earlier, haha). I guess proportions is what caught my attention right away (it's usually the first thing that I notice). Hibiki's upper arm seems kind of short, and the forearms are on the long side. I think the shoulder width might be okay, since he isn't an adult. Just for future reference, a typical (adult) person has a shoulder width roughly equal to two head widths. His torso is probably on the short side, but that's hard to tell when the rest of the body isn't there. Oh, and light source. If the fish is supposed to be the light source, then the highlight for the arm on top should be on the side facing the fish, so the underside. Highlights on the face would be treated in a similar manner. I might have somehow incorporated a tiny bit of yellow into the background. I see that you have used the green in the figure, and using a little yellow in the background would help unify the subject and background even more. My general rule is to try to use my main colors throughout an artwork so that all the parts are more unified or connected.
Okay, that's what is immediately apparent to me right now. Just things you can think about for future works.

I really do envy those who can work with traditional media. Hopefully, I'll be able to when I join an art class next year.
I totally didn't notice his upper arm being so short and bent funny. o_O; I believe I was trying to foreshorten the upper arms and have the forearms come outward on the sketch, but I just plain fail at foreshortening. I fixed it a bit and reuploaded it, but it's hard to fix anatomy problems this far in.
Does the shoulder width look too short to you? Technically, it's two heads wide there. The hair is probably throwing off the head width since it's flowing outward. Or at least that's what I tried to do. A normal adult male's shoulders should be about 3 heads wide, though I tend to draw my males with girlish/animeish shoulders at 2 heads. Sometimes less.
The lighting is actually coming from the upper left, with a really messed up back lighting from the lower right. The fish isn't suppose to give off any light, though it does look like it should with how bright it is. That's just bad planning on my part. I dimmed down the swish on the new one.
Thanks for the tip on uniting the figure with the background. I don't draw backgrounds much, so that's something that slipped my mind. I'll try to incorporate that the next time I have a background.
Thank you for the criticism. I'll try to fix up my anatomy on future drawings. =] I'm surprised you didn't say anything about his face or the wrists, though I suppose the wrists would be part of the elongated forearm problem. I've been getting into a bad habit of making them really thin. I fixed them now though.

My art teacher is moving classrooms next year, so I don't envy him for having to move all of the art materials and stuff.
Yeah, the "problem" areas are not so obvious now. I guess the hair did throw me off a little when I was looking at the shoulder width. I also tend to draw my guys with 2 head-width shoulders, haha. I myself am not too fussy about lighting in my own artwork. I just saw the glowy looking fish, and did a double-take. The dimmed swish makes it easier to see Hibiki as well.
I actually thought the face was fine. I tend to draw my characters with western noses and Asian mouths. So they tend to have long, straight noses and and small mouths. It confused a family friend, who is a graphic designer when he saw something in my sketchbook. I know that according to the standard model, the corners of the mouth are supposed to line up with the center of the eye (well, pupil in a front view), and I think that is the major difference in the way we each drew Hibiki's face. I also did not notice the wrists. I think I have a tendency to draw them thin as well, but I do not usually notice how I draw them, so long as they are not grossly skinny or thick. I also think that it is simply the natural tendency to make things pretty and more elegant that comes with being a girl, haha.
If you ever need help with backgrounds, I can always give some sort of input^^. It's fun to exchange ideas with other artists, and there's the added bonus that we can help each other out with problem-solving.
