Description
Commissioned byKnee up | Simple Background
This one definitely was a lot of work, as I designed a lot of this character mostly off description. The only character I've designed ever was my Heru, so I was actually kinda afraid of going into this.
Also these kind of poses are haaaaaard, especially when props like the cape and the big sword are involved.
I also experimented with 2 things:
1. Shading with higher contrast, both in saturation and value
2. Colour dodge!
I may have gone a little overboard with these, but I'm still happy with how the drawing turned out!
Just one more commission to finish before I open up November's slots!

Love the color and shading in this one, they look great; I don't think you overdid it at all. I think that I know what the problem is with the arms though: first of all, I don't think there's enough foreshortening, and it could benefit with a bit more of a twist in the body for even more foreshortening. Second, her stance. It doesn't really work for any sort of practical pose, let alone defensive swordplay, and displays only a very nondescript stance that doesn't imply any particular idea. I suggest looking up some actual defensive broadsword stances when designing such a pose, and giving your own artistic exaggeration with it. It pays to do your research!

There is something weird about her shoulder but you did well with your color and shading practice, I don't find that you went overboard at all, it's amazing!

Are you open to a little bit of constructive criticism from someone that used to draw in high school?

Your color is amazing! Your posing and proportions on the other hand are a bit rough around the edges. I think you can fix both problems if you look at pose mannequins.Β doll-a.net/terawell/ these will be a good foundations to start from and once you get more comfy you can exaggerate the models a bit more to give your drawing more flare. The website also has a program to make your own mannequin poses but you can't save your poses unless you buy the software so I don't recommend it.

I actually did use design doll for reference while drawing this! You're right though, posing and proportions are something that I still need a lot of work on. Thanks!

Oh, my apologies. If it's ok can you tell me what you used if it's a resource online?

Design doll is a free posing program, I just opened it up and messed around with the model a bit

Oh! You're on the right track just keep working on your poses. Feel free to exaggerate a bit more so your characters look a bit less stiff. Heck at this rate I should just wait and see how you do in a few months!

I am looking at your art... then at the description where you said shading with higher contrast... saturation, value... color dodge?
Shiiee I don't understand any of that even after several years of drawing. Slow learner I am, I'm gonna check on some of your vid and online tutorial.
Good things there is download button on the phone. d:

Colour dodge is a layer mode, that's just something fun to play around with.
Hue, saturation and value are things you really gotta study though! Understanding those is extremely critical to choosing good colours for your drawings!
To simplify a bit:
1. Hue:Β The actual colour (green, red, blue, etc.)
2. Saturation : How strongly is the colour expressed (so 0% is greyscale)
3. Value : How dark is the colour
If you can find a diagram with a colour wheel / rectangle it'll be a lot clearer
