thanks May
well I had a really good reference to work from (specially for the face). The highlights were easy to spot and so where the shadows.

Not bad either, I like the variety of the hues, while the sketch looks almost grayscale. It seems that you devoted most of the time in the face, it looks very clean compared with the rest of the image.
It could be a good practice to make the same sketch multiple times, 5 or 6, reducing the time limit in each one, until you reach 5 mins for example, and make it as abstract as it could get, removing details as you go on, using aminimum amount of lines, and preserving only the basic shapes and tones of the image and see what you can get. This could help a lot. We made this practice in my school using a small piece of pine wood and indian ink, and the results were pretty interesting.

No prob! Oh, and one another tip is to try not to use the eraser at all, nor correct previous brush strokes. Once you make a stroke, that's it, move on, don't worry if it's not good or if you made a mistake. With practice you will get better. So, try to focus in the general volumes and not in details. In this way, the pics will look more "raw" and "primitive".
Also, in order to catch only the "vital info", you can try focusing your eyes behind the screen. That's a nice way to make fast yet accurate rough sketches, without using any refs.

oh and concerning the face:

I did use a different brush for it which tends to blend the colors better for the rest I used a normal hard edged brush with different opacity.

Kyena In reply to Deligaris [2004-12-14 14:18:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh Nick - cool - I try that out, thank you very much for the idea! I am a sucker for inputs like this..everything that could help me work on my skills.

As a matter of fact I did use subtle colors for this piece (greenish, blueish, purplish) but they looked almost grayscale when I wanted to save it for web (since I was working in a color proof mode).

Kyena In reply to henning [2004-12-14 08:12:03 +0000 UTC]

actually I did use all different kind of very subtle colors (green, blueish, purplish) but when I saved that thing I noticed that I once more worked in cmyk proof mode and the colors washed totally out when I saved for web - it's really annoying and getting on my nerves

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

henning In reply to Kyena [2004-12-14 08:15:32 +0000 UTC]

You can still turn off CMYK proof mode, and the adjust the colors to look the same in RGB WeΒ΄ll look into that, honey

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyena In reply to henning [2004-12-14 08:28:59 +0000 UTC]

I know I can turn it off - but I was not able to get the colors back in there...I could have thrown the computer out of the window when I noticed I did it again..it's so extremely annoying and besides the contrast on my LCD is totally different then on all other comps...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

henning In reply to Kyena [2004-12-14 08:39:46 +0000 UTC]

...still perfectly fixable WeΒ΄ll have a look at that some day. Do some simple calibration and stuff.
