Description
You take a deep breath as you stand behind the red curtainYou aren't nervous, you are exhilarated, wanting to do your best
The curtains inch open, revealing an anxious crowd
This crowd will decide whether or not you deserve to be on stage
This crowd will cheer or jeer depending on your success or failure
You now feel the nerves, but it's too late to remember them
You are on stage, you are no longer you but someone else
You play that someone else perfectly as you push your nerves away
You are frozen in your spot until the bright stage lights come on and you're blinded
You don't even squint because you are focused on your part
As soon as the lights flood the stage you are in action
The audience laughs, cries, and claps at almost everything you and your fellow actors do
This kind of reaction sets a new level of enthusiasm
You lose yourself in what could possibly be the most fun you've ever had
The curtain closes and the audience cheers at the top of their lungs
The curtain opens again to reviel a standing ovation as each cast member climbs out to take a bow
The night air fills with the excitement of this wonderful triumph of yours
You feel as though you'll never come down from cloud nine again
You feel like you could dance and sing in triumph until you pass out or lose your voice, which ever comes first
And you don't want to leave this, thrill, this joy
This is the thespian experience

I know exactly what that feels like. My first show was South Pacific, and I was an Island Girl. We all danced to the Overture, and the Island Girls were first. A fReshman in High School, Her first show, and her dance sets the movement for the rest of the show. It was one of the best nights of my life

i cried.
you have encompassed the exact feeling i am currently longing for again in this summer vacation, and the feeling i had the most vivid dream of (i awoke with the heart rate of the nerves and the heat of the stage lights)
oh. bravo.
as i read this it settles my craving to be on stage a bit, until this fall when i return once more.
thank you!
this is almost a direct recollection of opening night of The Foreigner this past fall.

Interesting poem. I like the openess of it, and it has great imagery. I do suggest that you try to stick to a rhythm though.
