I absolutely LOVE this series!!! It has almost everything in it: the mathematical paradigm covered by an endlessly active nature, life and decay as part of a vicious cycle without any sort of beginning or end, the marbled masks that speak critically (are they hypocrites or is it only me?) and a brilliant assortment of colours that combine the ancient past with the most recent future, the dead sculpture with the alive body. It reminds me a lot of Klimt and Schiele's work, but this has a taste of its own, a new whole palette of expressiveness. Brilliant!!!

well all humans have hypocrisy within them, so the masked faces representing human emotion and subconscious, can be hypocrites..... so you are not wrong there........
i did not take inspiration from Klimts and Schieles work, but is so awesome that i guess subconsciously it took some inspiration from two of my most favourite artists.... wow interesting stuff
glad you like the series and it will continue....... nobody knows until when, even i don't know until when....

"Subconsciously" is the magic word!! I really believe that your influences are now a working part within you, producing your own messages via a transfiguration of their own techinque. Literally, it's like you've digested them! - and that's usually the hard part, for me at least.Β
I don't think that all humans are hypocrites, or, to put it better: not all are consciously hypocritical. Sure, there are endless contrasts in each and every one of our souls, but these are, more or less, natural ambivalences, in my opinion, at least. One has to be really manipulative to be decidedly hypocritical.

indeed the magic word... , well is kind of great hearing from someone else how well i understand the artists i admire because as much as a person says themselves how much they understand the artist, sometimes it sounds as if they are prideful of their own intelligence (prideful in a bad ego way), but when you hear it from someone else it seems less egotistical........ i guess... well my crazy thought...
i think if you read enough, and look enough and understand enough the artist you admire you digest them without knowing it......

i agree, to be that manipulative you do need to be be as much a hypocrite.....
but i still believe that even though maybe not all are hypocrites, everyone has the conscience to be one.....Β

Oh, I agree - but, strangely, I think it's a bad thing, to always wait for others to say good things for you. I know that feeling very well, and it hurts me deeply. Is it part of our Greek upbringing? Because I hear similar things from other Greeks, but it's much rarer with Englishmen, for example, or Germans. I think we're a depressive bunch... in a way, we love to repress things that are only natural, and definitely not bad (from my perspective). It's not bad to feel good for yourself, or to recognize that you have achieved a lot of things.Β

Egotism... such a strange word... because, the very moment you call someone an "egotist", you have to refer to personal system of values; you judge him/her based on your system, a system of your ego, of your conscious self... We are all egotists, I believe, thank god for that, but not selfish. Selfishness is the isolation in the ego, the inability to look beyond the self. It's more of a curse than an annoyance, I think.

You are certainly not a selfish individual.

i agree, is not exactly a good thing to wait for the opinion of others about how good you are.....
part of me thinks it is our greek upbringing, to always take into considerations what others may say about you..... so you got to fix that, or do that..... just so other fuckers don't gossip about you, and i think as much as you change yourself so others wont talk about you, they will always find something to gossip about........ i just don't care what anyone thinks and it makes me feel much happier
come to think of it we might just be a depressive bunch like you said hahaha

is true we all have an ego, is not a bad thing, the bad thing is those who have wayyyy too much... they have no control over their ego and it gets annoying and ugly.... "selfishness is the isolation in the ego" i like what you said, it makes sense to me...

yeah i don't believe i am selfish...... maybe sometimes, actually it depends, is it selfish to think about your needs more than others sometimes? key word is sometimes

Indeed it is. I mean, we need to be, sometimes. In Greece many don't know about the limitations of personal space; I often hear things from total strangers that make really angry. Don't get me wrong - most are just willing to give advice, but giving advice (especially without being asked to!) means you consider yourself better than the person you're helping... it's the darker side of assistance. I think most orthodox and catholic nations have that tendency to overdo it in social contacts... whereas the protestants lie at the other end; they sometimes almost have none! I think it's funny, to see all our flaws and intricacies and advantages and greatness together.

Thing is, you can give money to someone and do it selfishly. You can give someone instructions or care for someone and still pass on a message of utter selfishness - whereas, you can be silent next to someone's pain out of great interest in them, out of love, also, or respect for them. It's strange. I like it.

i hear things from strangers that make me angry as well, a lot of the time i hear things from previous generations that i don't like, but those generations are not as adapt to modern society and acceptance of people as our generations is......
most that give advice without been asked to do actually believe they are better than the person they give the advice to, to be honest i have done that once or twice, mainly because the ones i gave advice to seem to have been doing something that was not going to end up well for them so i intervened......... i am a person who believes that i am not better than anyone else and that is mainly because i have not or never really had any confidence..... a lot of the time when i hear someone say something nice to me i believe they are saying it to be nice...... and i HATE that....
i also thought orthodox (especially) and catholics are very social, and it all starts from a church....
yeah it is funny...

it is strange, but i feel like we only really have one life and in the modern world just about anything can kill you, there is more people getting cancer now than it was 100 years ago...... so i feel is ok to act selfish sometimes for your own self to make your self happy, because lets face it now with all the shit you hear and are happening who is anyone to judge you if you want to think about your self so you are not always depressed or dead...... i mean life is quite short why bother with what people think about you.......... i guess that is why the world is slightly more selfish now than before.....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WilliamDallwitz In reply to kyri-IS-dark [2015-01-15 22:01:19 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about intervening. I often find myself in the same position, only I mostly decide not to speak. "They'll find their own way." But it's often the way something is said and not only the words themselves that make or break a message... whenever I feel it is very important to talk to somebody without their permission, I always begin by saying "I am sorry, but..." - that way, trying to let them know that I begin out of a position of respect to them.

I really don't think people are just beign nice to you. You have lots of things that are worth compliments. I think this insecurity has inner reasons, as do most kinds of insecurities. Forgive my next question, but how old are you exactly? If I were to guess, I'd say 16 - or 17. I'm saying this because you really remind me of myself when I was that age (yeah, three and a half year ago - what a greeeat distance! ), and I was really troubled by all these things. Hvae I told you that I visit a psychotherapist? I have had some serious depressives episodes and I'm an obsessive-compulsive neurotic, but I simply cannot believe the progress that I've made. And I think that, perhaps, you might need some assistance in dealing with similar issues.Β

I know that what I said probably sounds in really bad taste - just like the kind of advice we were talking about earlier. But I feel so close to what you describe, and it really hurts to imagine more people trapped in the same labyrinths as I was.

i agree, sometimes the tone in which you give the advice may make people not accept it, because they may think your been condescending.......
i do the same thing, i started it off with a "i am sorry, but", because well it seems polite doesn't it.......

i am actually 23, and i also had these insecurities when i was younger, is just they haven't left yet....... part of me thinks they have not left is because if i started to feel that my artwork was good or great or even fantastic i would slip up and i would not try as hard to make it better...... my thoughts on others saying what they say because they are trying to be nice to me... that thought will never leave my head i will always think that.. trying to figure out the alter motives......
i never knew you went to a psychotherapist, so it seems that it helped....
it would be nice to go to one, but is cheaper and probably better if i psychoanalyze myself like i always have

trust me is not in bad taste... it makes sense that if you have lived through certain part, to want to give that advice.....

I am very glad that you didn't take my advice as an offense, so many people do! Not that I tell others that they should go to a therapist too often, even though I sometimes probably should...

In my case, it has helped me beyond description. In my case, my psychotherapist is a greatly wise individual - he is more of a teacher of sorts, the one I'd consult during the rennaissance. Of course, being part of a therapeutic relationship has some added limitations - in order for the process of healing to actually work - but it's nothing crazy or absolute. I'd call these limitations a sort of "augmented respect towards speech", as everything that is said or shown in any way is taken into extensive consideration, like looking very hard at a blade of grass and gradually realising the millions of ways it is different from the next blade of grass. It is a very spiritual experience for me.

And you've really nailed the reason for which I thought you were younger! I tend to connect these insecurities with youth in general, as I've seen myself change significantly. But it most likely has nothing to do with age, I believe. One could be eighty years old and still live with the same complexes of his twenties.

I was worried about my art, too. Or, to be more precise, I was afraid that I was going to let go of it completely and become something like an accountant or engineer or whatever. After all, I've often seen artists whose work is primarily a means of inner balance; take Schiele and Kokoschka, for example, or Warhol. Even David Lynch stopped his psychotherapy sessions because he was afraid they would cut off his creativity. In my specific case, I simply found a different purpose in writing music; it stopped being a "slave" to my mental problems and became a kind of refined language, a clearer way of saying something to the world. After all, it's all I can do on this earth.

But, without any doubt, it's pretty fucking expensive! I think they ask high rates as a symbol of the patient's interest in the process, kinda like saying "If you're willing to pay me this much every week, then you must be willing to change things in yourself."

yeah i don't easily take offense to advise mainly because i get what people are trying to say, so i don't take it the wrong way.......

so it seems psychotherapy has helped you see things and observe much better than before.... makes sense

i believe that, you could be eighty and still have those complexities in your twenties were your still figuring out the world and what part you take in it......

glad you didn't let go of your art, is almost a sad thing to see a creative person just let go at some point and do something that apparently makes more of a "living"........... all i hear is what i know, that art does not make the money it used to and honestly i feel people now believe art is not an important subject or even a thing to do.......... they ask you to become lawyers, accountants, doctors, business people, or even possible athletes.... because apparently that is steady money and art becomes a hobby.......... those idiots fail to realize or know that some of the greatest minds and thinkers have been artists........
as artists we are always afraid something could cut off our creativity..... i literally go insane anytime i have a artblock, had to find a way to get my block disappear by doing various things......

how much does it cost to go to a psychotherapist? if it is a long term thing, how much did you spend if you don't mind me asking.... out of sheer curiosity or it might be cheaper if i continue psychoanalyzing myself in my room hahaha

Reading your post, I had to ask: how do people treat art in Britain? Because, sometimes I get the impression that there is very little veneration of artistic creation in Greece. it's not that "there's no money in it", it's simply a weird tradition that sees artists as lazy good-for-nothing parasites; now, if it is a result of our predominantly agricultural history or a more recent invention, I don't know, but it was certainly augmented during the Junta period ('67-'74). Just watch any classic Greek film with Stavridis or Makris in the leading roles, and you'll see almost immediately what I'm talking about.

Then again, the artist community was one of the minorities which criticised those regimes, even though in a rather scared way. Perhaps this devaluation of the artist was a political means back then.

So, most "serious" artwork in contemporary Greece has to be connected to a Marxist ideology in some way. Otherwise, I believe very few people would pay attention to it. Rather childish, I think.

[those idiots fail to realize or know that some of the greatest minds and thinkers have been artists...]Β I really don't understand why genius has to be expressed in mathematical terms! Seems to me that, if you're not a physics whiz, you must be dumb, at least according to certain contemporary materialistic philosophies. But - what the fuck?! How can genius even be measured, for crying out loud?! In my opinion, everyone's a genius in their field of interest. I find it really absurd to say that, for example, math is good, but sculpture is stupid, especially considering that all kinds of knowledge, feeling and experience are - in my opinion - essentially one and the same thing.Β

Then again, there are some scientists who consider music to be merely a waste of time.

that is a good question, the thing is in britain they have some of the best art museums/ galleries, some of the best art universities and art fairs every year..... soooo saying this is obvious that here in london and britain they appreciate art, everything from i guess fine art to street art (by street art i do not mean graffiti, i mean art that is done on the street) there is a difference, graffiti most of the time is what they call "tags" which are typographical crap that i hate, while street art is quite nice they can invoke quite a lot even political and is usually images rather than crap typography.......
but is still not an easy thing becoming an artist even here, is just there is not much jobs for artist unless your one of the very best.... most end up teaching art which is something i hope will not happen to me...... also most people now are days prefer to have digital artists or illustrators to do a job rather than a fine artist......
you are correct, art right now seems like something you do as a hobby, and anyone who gets a art degree never use it and just have it there as a general knowledge thing...... you see i always saw art more than just drawing and painting, i also believe there is some philosophy in it, poetry, highly creative (and that is never a bad thing) and lets face it artists are open minded and understand many things... i don't know but those seem like great fucking qualities....

interesting, why do you think that serious artworks in greece has to be connected to the marxist ideology for those to pay attention? i mean there is nothing wrong with expressing ones political views or any views in art, that is a given, but it seems rather precise with the marxist thing......

the thing is with the whole "genius" thing is that most who are regarded as that solve problem, and in math and science that is a main thing solving something...... i don't understand it either but to say that is the society right now...
and i agree with you, how in fact can genius be measured????
i never thought math was good, i see why is necessary but that doesn't mean is good, then again i have not much say since i am terrible at math , i tried to get good at it but no hope for me, just don't understand it..... also who ever thought sculpture is stupid should burn alive......

oh hell no, music is not a waste of time....... well good music, i don't even want to get into the whole thing with pop music........ but anyways music is like part of a persons personality, if you hear someone doesn't like music is as if they don't have personality........ i have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like music.... they are rare to me

So, Britain is respectful towards art. In fact, today I saw some footage of street protests on art in Britain but didn't look into it any further. And the various street happenings are very famous around the world, Banksy is one of the first I think of, but also the older Hockney and Beuys. I think British art is a little "calmer" than its central European contemporary creations, and to my eyes and ears it has always been - that'a both a great advantage and a disadvantage.

"artists are open minded and understand many things..." Well, as much as anyone else, I believe. In my opinion, there are scientists, mathematicians, geneticists, philosophers, psychoanalysts who understand many things as well... it all comes down to the individual's personality. There are composers such as Boulez or Stravinsky who believe that only they possess the "True" knowlegde and that everyone else is an idiot. Of course, that doesn't make them any less of a genius, but they aren't likeableΒ characters, according to my personal tastes.

"interesting, why do you think that serious artworks in greece has to be connected to the marxist ideology for those to pay attention?" Actually, I had to think about it for a longer time than I'd expected, because this comment of mine was merely an impression I had picked up. I think it all comes down to the popularity of Marxism/communism/left-wing radical policies in Greece (I hear the situation is somewhat similar in France and Germany, too). In general (and, once again, this is purely my personal opinion), most youths that have picked up political ideas lean towards the left. Of course, there are many young people that are still searching for their personal views; these have no particular ideological line, and I'd like to consider myself one of them. Those that are part of the youth branches of major political parties are usually the "loudest", always shouting slogans and passing borchures and selling their party's newspapers et.c. Many of them are artists as well, so the works they create are usually drenched in the colour of their political upbringing.

So, in short, it is a matter of the creators' background, and the background of the people they cater to.

"then again i have not much say since i am terrible at math" That's very interesting! Because, looking at your artwork, I always thought that you were in fact very good at math! Perhaps it may be the teachers you happened to connect with, or the way it was presented to you, but I can see a very clear mathematical organization of your work.Β

yes they are respectful towards art, and you see it clearly when you go to the right places in london where there is nothing but galleries or if you go to the art events that happen through out the year.......
i remember going to Bristol to see a gallery opening of banksy artwork.... it took nearly 3 hours to go from london and me and my friend got lost twice, but it was worth it he had some nice stuff there.....
the thing is most artworks that are considered like national treasure to england are usually portraits of lords or kings or queens or any who are royal or high society and also great landscapes of brittain..... the national portrait gallery in london there is about 2 floors of nothing but old portraits of lords and such... it seems that a lot of true in the heart british art was usually stuff like that.......

i agree that many others are open minded, but i merely meant that usually a trait of an artist is to be open minded.....
interesting thing, do you think geniuses are likeable or do you think that many may not like them because they call themselves geniuses? because i have always felt like the word genius, even though has a meaning, it kind of felt to me that is a sort of word to use so they ones who have it are better than you......... maybe is just feeling thatΒ Β

ahhh i see so it was an impression..
well it kind of makes sense that youths would go more to the left, i mean if i am correct (i say that because i am not very much political ), but lefts are more liberal and idealistic, while right are conservative and it seems they don't like to change as much as the lefts who look more into the future.........
is very interesting.....

i am not good at math, as much as i studied for exams i just did not understand it, it never stayed in my brain it was another language for me that i couldn't get a grasp of...... teachers that i had were good math teachers but not so good at trying to teach me in particular...... still need a calculator even for the most basic math.....
i think i understand perspective from a artistic point and not so much a mathematical point, i guess that is why it may seem like there is a mathematical organization...... i was always able to see like a room with many angles and lines and draw them but not to a mathematical accuracy but rather a artistic accuracy........

Filled with portraits of lords, sounds about right! I mean, from what I've seen online and on TV documentaries about the various aspects of British life, they seem to be very focused on their royal heritage. And, you know? I like it. It makes me feel a bit like a romantic dandy, I even daydream sometimes that, perhaps one day the Queen will try to make things a little better in the historical mess the world has found itself in.

But, of course, it doesn't happen... I suppose that's why they call it day-dreaming. And the aristocracy hasn't made things better for the rest in the last 2000 years it's been active...

It's just sad to see her, being a symbol of her people, of the union they have decided to create as a society rather than live in personal isolation, simply stands idly back as things get continuously more intense. A short trip around the internet and all kinds of extreme left-wing anarchists, neo-nazis, segregational racists, very aggressive feminists and all other kinds of -ists run amok on each other. If that's the image of our world today, then artists like you and me have a LOT of hard work lying ahead...

"interesting thing, do you think geniuses are likeable or do you think that many may not like them because they call themselves geniuses?Β " I agree, it really is interesting. Some people tend to read even the slightest admission of something positive as blatant egotism. But---why? Saying "Yes, I believe I am wise." and "Bow before the strength of my wisdom, you savage scoundrel of idiocy!" are two very different things! Acknowledging that you have positive traits is, almost always, simply a matter of reality. The people that try to feel better through others - by degrading them in any way - are doing something something which has very little in common with positive traits. In fact, they reveal their great insecurity about themselves, and their lack of a well-developed structure of the soul; they need others in order to feel good and are, as such, relatively incapable of sustaining their psyche when found in isolation.

It is this fine line, I believe, that separates people we find "interesting" to those we find "arrogant". I think that both aspects exist in both kinds of individuals... like the two sides of a coin, it's a matter of perspective (that's why I try to be very careful in the way I phrase myself). I've sometimes seen some people around me like individuals that I think are appaling.

And it's often our own ideas that are projected onto others. In this case, we simply dislike (aspects of) ourselves, not the other; the other functions as a mirror for us, in situations like these.

yes most british are obsessed with the royals and is evident but how much hype there was a week or two away when the new "princess" was born....... it was all hilarious to me....
it seems that here in england they kind of need the queen because she keeps people together, with the amount of lords, dukes and others connected to royal heritages, if there wasn't a queen here i have a feeling they would just take parts of england for themselves.. were like oxfordshire would belong to one duke lord and cornwall would belong to another.... that kind of thing...... many are obsessed with the royals and always trying to see if they have some sort or royal heritage blood to just elevate themselves above others in society england.... if you go to knightsbridge or kensington or covent garden london becomes very highclass.....Β
i guess it is a nice thing to day dream about and well who hasn't had those day dreams about belonging in this kind of british highclass society.......... except for me unfortunately i day dream about been in middle earth or in westeros hahahaha
no aristocracy has not made things better.......... maybe that is one of the reasons why greece has kicked out the kings and queens and why one of them came here in england and married the queen......... you know essentially the next to take the british throne would be half greek and have greek royal blood along with the british royal blood........ hmmmm not many british see that or realize it............ that makes me a little happier

haha it will be hard for artists like you and me, actually you more than me because you are much smarter and more political, i don't know shit about politics, because lets face it people are getting better at lying and is hard to tell when they lie to you from the beginning and politicians are professional liars......
their really is a lot of extreme -ists, and -paths................... i am interested in the world a head many predict a world war 3....

i agree it is a matter of reality to acknowledge positive traits.......... of course though there are those few who acknowledge too much and end up having this god complex...... i find it hard to argue with those, because they believe so hard in there own ego that there perfect and right that is almost a brilliant argument......
it is true that those who make themselves feel better by degrading others have this insecurities which why is easier for them to take it out on someone else rather than themselves....... i prefer if they take it out on themselves and stop involving bystanders........Β  Β

those who are openly arrogant all the time obviously do not care what others think because they believe there either better than them or right and we all have that thing sometimes to be arrogant in been right, like a few days ago i had friendly heated argument with a mate of mine about something idiotic as to which pill in the matrix was the one that neo took and saw the truth, i said red my friend said no is blue and i was arrogant at some point because i new i was 1000% right hahahaha stupid things to get arrogant about......
i also try to be careful how i phrase myself and what i say, but there are those times when i just say what ever comes to my mind with no filter or more times that i know what i am going to say is bad but i say it anyways to see the reaction of the persons face............
