In a parallel to Twilight's Kingdom, Discord's chaos spawn Mayhem also grows bored with friendship and normality, building up to the point he betrays his friends and challenges them to the ultimate game with their lives at stake. Giving all of them superpowers he has them fight through his world until getting to his castle for the final fight with him where he learns just WHY friendship is the ultimate power in Equestria.

Since she's already skilled with magic as an alicorn, Mayhem only gave her extendable wings that are almost impervious to damage, related to how she initially was embarrassed over her big wings, but overcame that shame through her friends.

Since Pound and Pumpkin are twins he gave them elemental magic that only works to it's full potential when in physical contact with one another.

Since she's named after a candy, Peppermint Swirl was given the ability to stretch at will.

Since he's mysterious, Masquerade Ball was given the power of shadows.

Tree Leaf was given the power of transformation, but it doesn't have a thematic significance like the others. It's just a parallel to their first meeting, where Mayhem turned him into a dragon to win him over when he initially was offput by his appearance.
