There are theories that because of how much Alex Mercer has evolved, he has still a chance to survive consumption.
On the other hand, a fork ending where Heller actually wakes up Mercer from his wild ambitions would set the stage for a sequel, if Activision didn't punt Radical for making a game that had actual story.

that article came out a decent amount of time before prototype 2 was released and thus before they knew he actually died. That was a guess of what would happen in Prototype 2 before it came out. Sadly, they were wrong.
