i`ll try to explain basic things here, so this is rly basic stuff! remember it!
soo i prefer to work with emm i think smth from 5 to 20 layers in my PSD
i usually create 1 layer with shape -> new layer (clipping mask) -> focus on 1 part of image -> merge down
and again new layer(clipping mask) ->.....
sometimes i go with 1 layer and just paint... 
you can get interesting result if you try to play with brush softness
personaly i use my own brushes, so they are not like totaly soft or hard...
i recomend you to try like soft brush\hard eraser or hard brush\soft eraser
and i prefer to blend colors with brush( with differen softness) insted of smudge tool
colors - its acually hard for me to explain this here. but i`ll try
so i often use simple hue shift and things like frm cold to warm colors.... and simply paint it
sometimes i like to add
+ 1 overlay layer with light color
+1 overlay layer with dark color
+1  multyply layer
this is basic
i hope you find here some answeres)

Thanks, I am also not a native speaker so I understand the situation. for the soft brush outside of the selection area. The part I know most of the techniques, but the layer setting is going to helpful. I will be looking forward to see your tutorial.
