Edit: Better quality update. You can see all of the nummy detail now.I promised that I would upload a completed version of this some day. ^^ It's one of my favorite and, imo, one of my most accomplished figure pieces. I spend hours and hours on it, and I loves it. I wanna get it framed.

Very nice work. I know it's been years (literally) since I commented on a piece of yours, but the improvement is phenomenal. REALLY good work!! Nice flow in the hair. Maybe try some cross contour flow in your shading on the body?

This is beautiful. I'm not sure why the white lines are there, but I really like that touch to this drawing. Her left arm looks a bit thin/distorted, but that very well could be because of the angle. Angles are so tricksy Great work!

LA-Draws In reply to Smidow [2011-10-09 18:35:05 +0000 UTC]
The white lines are sighting and measuring lines. All life drawing artists (unless they have years and years of life drawing under their belt) use sighting and measuring lines as a tool to find the relationships between angles and body parts in order to make everything proportionate. I left them in the piece as part of the assignment for class as well as my own personal aesthetics.
Thank you so much for the comment.

I think one of the things that jumps out to me most with this one is how you've sketched out the planes of the body in geometric shapes, framed with white, and how you left those lines in. It's a neat twist on your average figure study, which focuses perhaps more on the smooth shading. Personally, I think the planes are great. You've done a fantastic job capturing the folds and rolls, and the luminous quality of the skin from the ambient lighting. The hair is well-done too. There are two areas that draw my attention. The first is the derriere area, where there are two small spots that seem... bare. It's not a major issue, but it's a little distracting. The second is the surface the woman is sitting on, which is entirely white on the left and entirely black on the right. It helps establish the direction of the lighting, but could perhaps use a bit of dilution or softening.
Overall, lovely figure study, warts and all, so to speak. Hope this was helpful!

I just came back to this piece today, I could have sworn I favorited it, but apparently not.
This is freaking gorgeous! I love the angularity and all of the white diagonals coming out from the edges. (It makes it almost look faceted like a cut gemstone)
I am particularly fascinated with the shapes of the leaning arms and the folding of the flesh around the elbows. I am also a sucker for artwork of the back of figures. The hidden face makes it somewhat enigmatic.
Another really high point of this picture is the flow, the way the planes of the back draw your eye straight up to the geometric swirl of the figure's hair.
Just all-around gorgeous. There's absolutely nothing I would change about this piece.
If I had money I would request this as a print... but I'm so broooooke lol

This is a great figure piece, not only for the detail that you put into her body but also for the overall presentation. My favorite bit by far is how you've taken those lines and extended them to create this beautifully framed shot.
The white is a nice touch as well, it highlights everything so elegantly and draws attention to details that we might have otherwise missed.
Great work!! Keep it up

yes, i like that you showed us how you build up the human figure from shapes, angles. This picture without these lines will be just nice and little boring

I think you're right. The piece would lose something if the sighting and measuring lines weren't left in the piece.
Thank you so much for the comment!!

The human body is something wonderful to look at. But in a painting I find it boring sometimes. Unless it shows me something beyond the body.
Your portrait, the way it is marvelously composed, suggests to that I, the viewer, am somehow able to change, re-create and improve this body into perfection. And I love that, because I think that's how we see each other and especially after spending some time observing someone - we are all half utopians.
I just wish you had a better photo or scan. Apart from that, congratulations - a great piece.
