Because he did a mistake in the beginning when gave out his location to L. Death Note provided such opportunities, but only if used their correctly. And Light missed his chance. L and other detectives would never have found him, if he did not make this mistake. He can be anywhere in the world and how L planning find out exactly where? Interrogate everyone on the planet? And with the help of Death Note Light could kill in many different ways. No one would have suspected anything. But thirst of power eclipsed his mind. And it's a very pity. Cold and calculating Light is much better than the mad Light.

You talking about 2nd part of the manga after L death? After their first meeting Light and Misa almost immediately have been arrested police and then they lost memories about Death Note after giving up the right to own them. But Light kill people before meeting with Misa too. Remember that FBI agent? And other 11 agents, there was no need to kill them, this action only increased suspicion L.

i was talking about the 2nd part. idk about the manga. ive seen the anime. what i weant by kira 2 was mikami. light shouldnt have told him to purposely use the death note in public

Yes, and this was mistake too. Anyway, the first mistake he made entailed all the rest. He did not got caught immediately only because other detectives no was so smart like L. And because he just lucky when he met this girl Misora Naomi before she told about her suspicions the police. Maybe this was a little different in anime, i don't know.
I read the manga, but do not watch anime.
