Well, I've made two separate paintings in which I changed the colors. In the end I just made an animation tween between the two pictures.
There are several ways of doing animation. If you want to make a GIF, I'd recommend using UnFreez, as it's a really easy to use animation program in which you can drag and drop your separate GIF files to create an animation.
If you've got adobe photoshop, you can animate layers through using the timeline function. Type that in the searchbar of YouTube and I'm sure you'll find something :3
Another option is through directly animate in adobe flash, but not a lot of people have that program, so that would make it harder.

I hope that helped a bit ~ In general, deviantart only supports GIF files and flash files. The like the photoshop way best for creating GIF animations, and you are probably gonna use a GIF animation for your icon, so that's what I would recommend. If you have troubles, let me know, I wouldn't mind animating the frames you've created ^^
