Description
I woke up the find California Proposition 8 had been ruled unconstitutional, and dug the basic sketch for this up to finish.Same-sex marriage is much more than the right to have a ceremony that's recognized; it means the ability to own things together, have spousal and dependent benefits, file taxes jointly, and generally be afforded the same rights as most everyone without the similar tendency (statistically) to throw it all away three weeks--or 30 minutes--after the ink dries on the marriage license.
Historically, marriage was a business relationship. It's nice to think times are changing towards marriage being built on a love worth fighting for.
Anyway...mini rant over. I really do love this piece. And the blonde is totally coincidentally looking slightly like Cinderella. What can say? I have Disney on the brain!
*Additionally, because I've received a few comments elsewhere: I am not gay/lesbian. This is not a self portrait with my partner. No congratulations for a nuptial that doesn't exist are in order.
Though congrats to all those going out to get hitched in Cali--may it be beautiful and blessed!

hellz to the yeah more people get divorced than married these days (no real information to back that up)
It's funny how so many people can get divorced yet same sex marriage would destroy family values...? doesnt make any F*cking sense to me.

I live in the midst of the Conservative States of America, but when I heard about this in the news, it filled me with happiness and optimism for the future. Here's hoping that gay marriage rights become legal in all of America!
Also, your picture is beautiful. I'm faving it as I type. ^ ^

Oh man I was so happy when I found out. I laughed at all the people who were posting angry comments on the yahoo news thread. As a native Californian I was pissed when prop 8 passed, (I'm still underage so I can't vote).

Thanks! I was afraid the posture looked off without the context of the lower bodies...the piece actually reaches to about hips. For now, it'll stay awkwardish, but it's a piece I'm sure to rework later.

My day was made yesterday when I heard that Prop 8 was ruled unconstitutional. TOOK THEM LONG ENOUGH!
I turned to my mom and dad (who are both Pro-Prop 8, but support me and my girlfriend... fucking weird I know) and said "HAH. I told you so! I told you that Prop 8 was going to get it's ass kicked by the feds!"
But we still have a long road ahead of us. It's going to Supreme Court, I believe, and depending on what they rule (hopefully the same as the Federal Court!) we shall see where we go from there.

It's not that odd. I have a good group of conservative friends who are adamant that marriage should only exist between heterosexual couples but accept and are supportive (and in one case are gay themselves) of friends who have come out. We all just agree that sexual and gender politics are off limit topics of conversation

Ah. Well, I don't know it just seems like a strange thing to me since people where I live are strictly supportive and against Prop 8 or not supportive and for Prop 8.
My parents only support me and my girlfriend, they completely disapprove of any other same sex couple.

I'll start off by saying this is a very lovely piece of art!
As for Prop 8, living as I do here in the buckle of the Bible Belt (Texas/Oklahoma) I fear it will be very many years before the local status quo will finally change, even if the decision is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. So I'm happy, but not excited.

Thank ya.
Heh. I currently reside in San Antonio, TX. My excitement deals in the wheels finally turning. The case that would end in the national/federal supreme court would more or less only rule on a) whether marriage is a right and b) whether it's legal to ban a right via popular demand. So it wouldn't legalize gay marriage--but (if it ruled in favour of anti-prop 8 people) it would make it illegal to ban it...though then comes the debate on defining marriage...

I just moved from Texas to Oklahoma to keep working.
I'm afraid that states like ours will continue to attempt to draft new laws to circumvent the inevitable.

At its core, Prop 8 banned gay marriage throughout the state of California and set precedence for other states to legally ban it. The ruling of a State Supreme Court Judge passed down today said the proposition was unconstitutional on the grounds that it violates the equal protection clause--as well as a few other key points. An easy rundown of the rulings (that overturned prop 8) is here: [link]
Now, from how I understand it, it goes through an appeal and in the end, end up at the national Supreme court since neither side is backing down.
The ruling, however, doesn't legalize gay marriage, and the appeal means that couples may not be able to get married and have it considered legal if the proponents of the ban win the appeal; but it's a definitive step towards it not only being legal in Cali, but also a national decision on the matter.

As a native Californian (who voted no on prop 8 in the first place, thanks very much), I can't express how happy this decision has made me. Civil rights, particularly those of the minority, should not be subject to majority rule. I am so glad the judge made the right decision, and i hope this gets the ball rolling on marriage equality nation-wide.
This is adorable. I especially love the redhead; her dress, the swoop of hair, her sweet blush. Really sweet pic!
