Description Julie was in full relaxation mode. She was sprawled over the couch in her underwear and socks. Some show was playing on Netflix that she was barely paying attention to. She had only been awake for a few hours, but she felt like a nap was inevitable. Her vacation was off to a great start.

She heard something. Probably just the T.V. She focused on her show. Then she heard it again.

”…because I was gonna go out tonight with it, if you’re okay with that.”

Oh. It was her roommate, Miranda.

”Huh? I’m sorry, I missed what you said.” Julie stretched out. She looked up to see Miranda in a sleek dress and heels. She was holding some grey metal disc thing in her hands. It looked like a miniature roomba.

Miranda laughed nervously. “Oh, it’s okay.” She strummed her fingers on the grey thing. She took a breath in and paused. “I…wanted to know, um, if you had any plans tonight.” She looked like she wanted to say more, but she tightened her lips.

“I plan on doing practically nothing, if that…” Julie yawned mid-sentence. “…hoouaah, counts as a plan.”

Miranda’s shoulders scrunched up. Her grip on the disc tightened. “Oh, that’s great! Because, I was wondering, if I could, um…” She bit her lip. “Can I…go out with your head on my neck tonight?”

Julie was not quite awake enough to think too hard about this request. “Uh…yeah, I don’t see why not.” She started to adjust herself from laying on the couch to sitting on it. “We can swap heads real quick.”

”I, uh…still want to…bring my head with me, too.” Like a switch had flipped, Miranda started rattling off statements and half-sentences, a far-cry from her nervous stammering. “Cuz I want my friends - like they might not know it’s me without it - and having two heads seems fun - If you’re okay with it - your head will stay attached to me, so nothing happens to your head - not like I’m gonna lose either head if I’m holding it, but - oh, and you can use this while I’m gone!”

Julie rubbed her eyes and looked at Miranda. She was holding the grey disc thing out in front of her. “Oh…you want…both of our heads. And that thing is…”

”Sorry, I didn’t say - it’s a device you can put on your neck. You’ll be able to see and hear and stuff. I tested it for a bit - the quality isn’t bad for the price. You just gotta charge it up when it gets low.” Miranda resumed strumming her fingers on the device’s surface. “So…what do you say?”

Julie kept silent for a few eternal moments. She waited for a mental objection to form in her mind, but none came. She was probably going to end up headless at some point during her vacation - why not now? “Yeah…I don’t mind, you can have my head for the night.”

Miranda was visibly relieved. “Great! Oh that’s awesome, thanks Jewels! Let me just - yeah, I’m gonna grab our Sonic Knife real quick then.” Miranda put the disc down on the coffee table in front of Julie and made haste down the hall to their rooms. Julie had no idea if seconds or minutes passed between Miranda leaving the room and Miranda walking back in.

”Okay! Are you ready?” Miranda’s head was already on the table next to the device. She walked her body around the back of the couch without waiting for a response.

”Yeah, go for it.” Julie leaned slightly forward so her neck wasn’t against the couch. She closed her eyes. She felt Miranda’s left hand hook under her chin, followed by the touch of the blade to her neck. A few gentle carving cuts, each one deeper than the last, severed Julie’s head from her body. Her shoulders and fingers twitched.

Miranda watched herself intently; she didn’t want to drop Julie’s head. She did let the Sonic Knife drop to the ground on purpose. She lined up the inert head to her neck stump and pressed them together. Her new addition came to life.

”Oh! Wow, uh-“ “Wew, this is a bit-“ “-bit weird, isn’t-“ “-It?” Both her head and Julie’s head spoke over each other and continued Miranda’s sentences. “But it’s nice-“ “that seeing from-“ “-from two heads isn’t-“ “it’s not as hard as I thought-“ “-it would be.”

Both of Miranda’s heads giggled. Then she looked both down at Julie from behind her and slightly up at Julie from the table.

Julie rubbed her thighs. She tapped her feet on the ground. She didn’t reach up to her neck, nor did she move her arms to search around her.

”Huh.” “Huh.” Miranda said in unison. “I guess you’re…” “You’re used to this. Right.” “Right. Still, let’s get you-“ “-you connected to this thing.”

Julie sat in serene silence. She had forgotten all about the neck device until Miranda fit it snugly to her neck. Then she could hear the TV again. She could see it, too - and Miranda’s head on the table. She tried to look around, but her point of view didn’t budge. Then she saw Miranda’s body walking to the other side of the low coffee table. She had to lean her body back into the couch to angle her vision higher, which showed her-

“Hey, Jewels. Do you-“ “-you like how your head-“ “head looks on me?” “-on my body?”

Julie didn’t know what she thought about it at first. Seeing her head on someone else, someone else using it to talk; it made her finally reach up to her neck to touch the device instead of a head. She wanted to talk, but nothing happened.

”Oh, that thing-“ “It doesn’t have speech functions.” “Yeah, sorry.” “I hope that’s okay.”

Julie waved her hand at that comment. Then she pointed to both her neck and to where her head was and gave Miranda two thumbs up.

“Yeah, you like it?” “I like it, too.” “You’re head is-“ Miranda said the next part in unison, a nice harmony of happiness. “-soooo pretty!” She was back to alternating heads quickly; “I’ll try not to-“ “-to get too used-“ “to having it.”

Julie made her hands into a heart when Miranda complimented her absent head. She shrugged at the later comment. She wasn’t too worried about the length of her decapitation. She was, however, ready for that nap. She pointed to herself, then put her hands flat together and mimed sleeping to Miranda.

”Oh, no problem!” “I should be going anyways.” Miranda picked up her head from the table. She spoke from both heads before walking out of sight. “Thanks again, Jewels~!”

Another thumbs up from Julie. She leaned sideways to lay down on the couch again. She heard the door open and close a minute later. Her head had left the building.

She wasn’t bothered by it; the awareness was just a fact she now knew. What bothered her was the device. She couldn’t possibly take a nap with an unblinking view and incessant sounds. So Julie grabbed the device with both hands and pulled it from her neck. She blindly set it down on the table, then laid back down in the comfort of senseless oblivion.

Julie was soon asleep. The grey roomba disc device thing, however, had no sleep mode. It stayed on as Julie napped for hours. Julie was none the wiser to this by the time she finally remembered she had a “head” she could use.

She was surprised by how snug the fit was. It was like the device was measured to her neck stump. Her vision seemed normal…until she tried to move her eyes. The view was stubbornly still, always facing where her neck faced.

Jewels moved to stand up from the recesses of the couch. She heard a low whirring sound from the center of her head…which meant it was the disc making the noise. She walked across the room towards her bedroom. Lacking a head usually mean lacking balance, but she easily stayed steady. She guessed the soft motor-like droning was the reason she could stay upright. She used this freedom to wander the apartment, looking for something to do, something to get her attention. Food was out of the question. She couldn’t call anyone, not really. What about ——

[Beeeee-beepbeepbeep]

The whirring sound wound down and disappeared. Julie stayed on her feet for about fifteen seconds, but then she tried to move. She wobbled to her right, overcompensated with her arms, lunged to the left, slipped, and dropped to her knees. Her vision remained. Was anything making a sound?

[Beeeee-beepbeepbeep]

Julie started crawling forward. Her view was straight down to the carpet. It was annoying, but walking was probably not the best bet, either. A few seconds later, her hand fumbled against the wall ahead of her and her neck bashed the device against it. She shuddered from the minor impact down her spine and fell sideways. Her view from floor level showed her the bedroom hallway and little else. She thought to go to Miranda’s bedroom to look for the charger for this thing. Then her vision cut out.

[Beee-beee-beee-BOOBEEBOOP]

Now Jewels was certain she was deaf. It was so easy to notice once you couldn’t hear anything. She was also certain that finding the charger she’s never seen while headless without assistance was practically impossible. Still lying sideways on the floor, Julie gripped the device in both hands and popped it off of her neck.

She wondered how long it would be before Miranda came back. She wanted to taste again. Swallow. Lick her teeth, her lips. She thought about how much Miranda used her tongue today, and what she did with it. Having a tongue again would be great.

Julie spent several more hours fantasizing about what she wanted to do with her head when she got it back. All the while, she rolled and spread out on the floor, content with laying there and shifting and twisting her headless body.

She looked so content, in fact, that Miranda didn’t disturb her at all when she got home. She grabbed the device from where Julie left it and brought it back to her room to charge it. She returned to the living room with only Julie’s head on her neck.

”Two heads can be exhausting, Jewels. Thanks for letting me try it out, though!”

Miranda’s head donor arched her back. As she laid back down, her hand came up her chest. Her fingertips settled on roll-tapping her neck stump.

Miranda saw nothing Julie was doing. She saw the show Julie was watching on Netflix, long since done with auto playing. Miranda sat down and scrolled through some options before settling on reruns.

Miranda’s bedroom head slept. Miranda binged for a couple of hours before calling it a night. Julie continued her timeless writhing and undulation as Miranda retired for the night with the “borrowed” head still on her shoulders.
