Zutara Week 2020 Day 7: Rebirth

Long note on worldbuilding here...

First, Zuko and Katara’s condition was merging with Uki’s energy from her sacrifice out of love. They were put into a chrysalis (Because Uki was a nature spirit with caterpillar identity), and inside the process physically changed them. Believe me when I say that upon opening the cocoon, it was icky and goopy and nasty as they ‘shed’ their old skin. Literally. Hence why their hair is gone temporarily (it’ll grow back!). Uki gave them a ‘second chance’ at life together to share their love as she had witnessed. But her essence gave them a little extra something which you’ll find out in later posts when I continue this for another 4 parts of Zutara week.

Second, Zuko and his family dynamics. Namely his relationship with his only daughter Izumi. Since Bryke left us with only some info on Izumi in the artbook, I headcannon that she has a distant relationship with her father because of her upbringing. Fire Lord Zuko’s early reign didn’t give him a lot of free family time trying to rebuild a nation with the damaged world. Uncle Iroh basically raised her when Mai passed on early in her youth (I also headcannon that Mai died a handful of years or less after Izumi’s birth due to declining health from childbirth). I like Mai, but she always seemed like she didn’t eat enough or kept healthy habits. So, Izumi has a distant relationship with Zuko, but when her son was born, Iroh II (which she named after her main caregiver), Zuko had more free time to dedicate to family. He basically helped raise Iroh II while Izumi began taking on more political duties. In the end, he has a strong relationship with his grandson - and this part is cannon per Bryke.

Third, the Avatar world knows of Lord Zuko and Master Katara’s condition because camera’s and radio are a new developing technology globally. This plays a part into how they will interact with everyone going forward.
