Depending on how the comic is laid out, I usually try to look at the panel as a whole while I read its text and build context for what's going on as I go from panel to panel rather than just looking for text on a first pass and then paying more attention to the non-text-based information on another pass. That''s just how I do it, but your way works too. All depends on how much time we have to spend reading the comic I guess.
