Description

Archangel Raphael (”God heals/has healed”), angel of healing, associated with the virtue of humility.

In Catholic Christianity, Archangel Raphael is venerated as the patron of the sick, physicians, medical workers, pharmacists, lovers, young people, a variety of places (probably also healthy relationships) and against physical and mental illnesses as well as nightmares.

Besides his healing profession he’s also a badass, when it comes to kicking demon butt.

Both of these sides are prominently featured in the Book of Tobit, where he accompanies Tobias, son of Tobit, on his journey, as his advisor and protector. He helps the youth getting married to Sarah, a poor young woman who’s plagued by Asmodeus (who for some reason killed all of her seven previous husbands, before their wedding night). Raphael advises Tobias to wait with the marriage consummation and helps him drive the demon away. Then he chases Asmodeus all the way to Egypt, binds the demon and chains zir to the bottom of the next best deep body of water (in some versions he also strangles zir or snaps zir neck). All is well, Tobias can marry Sarah for real, does all ofhis father’s business, they all go back to his family, Raphael heals Tobit’s blindness, reveals himself to them all and departs.

In the Book of Enoch he’s tasked by God to bind Azazel, one of the rogue Watchers, who have gone to sleep with mortal women, rather than just watch over mankind and also taught them forbidden knowledge (like weapon-making and warfare). Raphael binds Azazel in Dudael (probably a desert or a place in Hell) and buries him alive under rocks, to suffer his punishment there, until Armageddon, when he will get cast into fire to burn for all eternity, for further corrupting mankind.

I’m kinda ashamed of how long this art took me, but still I like how it turned out. Also, this is the form he chooses to reveal himself in in my headcanon. I don’t have the skill to draw his real form the way I imagine it. *sobs*

In art he’s often depicted with a staff, a bag, a fish and/or a jug of water. I chose to go with the first and the last. ^^
