Chevy was not able to allow Michael Bay to use the actual concept car, so they hired Saleen to build five custom vehicles using the chassis of the Pontiac GTO (very similar in dimensions to the Camaro) and custom fabricated bodywork to create Bumblebee in vehicle form. Saleen also provided five custom 2S81 Extreme "Police Package" Mustangs to create Barricade.

Very true. The Camaro was just a concept, not a functional car at the time, so they had to find a way to make functional versions (even though they weren't genuine Camaros)
