Description
Just for fun I decided to redraw an old fantasy map of mine. Hohoho, so much fun and now that it's done I'd like to do another one. This was drawn and painted traditionally using pen and watercolor but the colors were edited a bit in photoshop. Actually it was kind of hard to get a picture of since it's too big for my scanner.

This is a wonderful map, I am curious how you drew it to be honest. I have several notebooks of graphing paper worth of maps that I would love to rend like this map.

Thanks. I drew all the details by hand so it's really just a matter of being patient and taking the time to do it.
This map was based off another map drawing I did years ago. Before I started the drawing I ripped the edges of the paper and stained the paper with watercolor, coffee, and tea to give it an aged look. I then lightly traced the details from the original drawing, the details I wanted to keep the same, onto the new paper. After I had the sketch laid down I slowly started to draw over it with pen and add in new details. Once the pen drawing was finished I added some color using watercolor. The steps are pretty simple but very time consuming.
If you already have a drawing of the map you want to do, and you're pretty happy with it, then you can trace an image of that map onto a clean piece of paper to give you a base to work off of. This is what I did for this one since I wanted the shape and general placement of lakes and rivers to be the same as the original drawing I did for this map. There are several different ways to trace sketches (lightbox, projector, transfer paper) but how I normally do it is to make my own transfer paper. You can do this by printing out an image of the sketch you want to trace, then cover the back of the printed picture with graphite, then tape that over the clean paper you want for your final drawing. You can then draw on top of the printed sketch and the lines should show up on the clean paper below.
If you're going to trace then I'd also recommend only tracing the details that you absolutely want to be the same as the sketch and doing the rest freehand. This way, at least for me, you can have more freedom to make improvements or changes to fit the style of the new map.
You could also just eyeball the original drawing, or use a ruler, or draw a grid on to the new paper.

Sweet, but now my question is how you digitally rendered it, what program you used and what you would recommend as far as graphic programs?

For this particular image I just took a digital photo of it and then adjusted the brightness/contrast and colors a bit using photoshop CS3. Most of the real work was done traditionally and the digital editing just exaggerated it a bit. Really most any image editing program can do the same thing... If you want to do most of the work digitally though then photoshop has a lot of capability so I'd say it's a good program. I've heard gimp can do most of the same stuff too but I've never tried that one.

Thank you, that's really quite a compliment.
I've always wanted to have a map that looked like it belonged to a fantasy novel but whenever I tried it in the past they never came out as well as I hoped. It was such a long process drawing all those stupid trees but I'm glad I took the time to do it.

If you look at the bottom left as the head, it looks like a butterfly fish- [link]
But if you look at the top right as the head, it looks like a sea-turtle!

another sign of the apocalypse...
"it was reported today that several people claim they can see the face of jesus on the map of the land of hohoho...they say that to find his image, one needs to only look at the area of crescent lake, which they say forms his halo...witnesses also claim that jesus appears to be staring at a giant bagel...watch channel 66 news at 6 for more on this breaking story..."
