Description
Afterwork: Bordered, sharpened.2007 Indianapolis Air Show, Mt. Comfort, Indiana
At the end of World War II, Chester W. Nimitz, then the Chief of Naval Operations, ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to keep the public interested in naval aviation. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration less than a year later in June 1946 at their home base, Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville, Florida. Flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat, they were led by Lt. Cmdr. Roy “Butch” Voris.
Only two months later on August 25, 1946, the Blue Angels transitioned to the Grumman F8F Bearcat. One year later, the 1947 team, led by Lt. Cmdr. Robert Clarke, introduced the now famous “Diamond Formation.”
By the end of the 1940’s the Blue Angels were flying their first jet aircraft, the Grumman F9F-2 Panther. In response to the demands placed on naval aviation in the Korean Conflict, the team reported to the aircraft carrier USS Princeton as the nucleus of Fighter Squadron 191 (VF-191), Satan’s Kittens, in 1950.
The team reorganized the next year and reported to NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, where they began flying the newer and faster version of the Panther, the F9F-5. The Blue Angels remained in Corpus Christi until the winter of 1954 when they relocated to their present home base at NAS Pensacola, Florida. It was here that they progressed to the swept-wing Grumman F9F-8 Cougar.
The ensuing 20 years saw the Blue Angels transition to two more aircraft, the Grumman F11F-1 Tiger (1957) and the McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II (1969).
In December 1974, the Navy Flight Demonstration Team began flying the McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II and was reorganized as the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron. This reorganization permitted the establishment of a commanding officer vice a flight leader (Cmdr. Tony Less was the squadron’s first official commanding officer), added support officers and further redefined the squadron’s mission, emphasizing the support of recruiting efforts.
On November 8, 1986, the Blue Angels completed their 40th anniversary year during ceremonies unveiling their present aircraft, the new sleek F/A-18 Hornet, the first dual-role fighter/attack aircraft now serving on the nation’s front lines of defense.

Hm, I wonder if there is an emoticon. If not someone needs to make one. Really though, it was all the Angels. I even have an autograph.

I don't know how red it will be on my side of the world, but it's suppose to start in about an hour here. I've got my tripod up, but I have to leave for school before it'll be finished.
Is the new user.

Hee hee hee I'm sorry but the term "satan's kittens" got to me... I can just picture a cute little kitten all blue eyed and adorable, until you reach down to pet it
Then he rips your arm off
The coloration on these guys is amazing, I love the blue and yellow combination.

LMAO. Satan's kittens. You are right though about the color. You can even see the bright yellow on the pilots' helmets.

Well I suppose when you're flying a plane or a jet as the case may be you'd want to be as visible as possible. It's a really sharp photo. If you're as good as this with planes I'd love to see what you'd do on a drag course. The one dragracer here I would murder just to get his souped up model A ford named Temper tantrum. Everytime he shows up at the races he almost always goes sideways when the light turns green. The guy is afraid of that car, he always takes his foot out of it when it does that. My dad always jokes that he has to go back to his trailer and clean off his seat It's a bright orange color, really nice.

Is it one of those alchohal funny cars? Those are pretty neat. At the track that my dad loves going to (he used to race there when he was young) theres a husband and wife team that both have rails (the long skinny ones with the huge slicks on the back and the narrow tires on front) Hers is neon pink and his is neon green. I think they're the Hughes, anyhow its a pretty small track so they always end up racing each other at least once, most of the time they're in the finals when it happens. The looser has to go home and take out the garbage when they get back For the last 7 times the wife has won
It's been proven that women have a higher reaction rate and she definately proves it all the time

It was at the airshow, belongs to the Navy. And actual 'rocket' car. In fact they had it racing a plane. Very cool. LOL. I used to love the drag races. Shirley Muldoney I think, and The Snake. Big Daddy Purdhome? The names sound familiar but the spelling escapes.

My dad would prolly know them not me. I stopped going in the middle of summers because the june bugs have an uncanny knack for flying into my hair and face. I do rememeber hearing about a car before I was born called Poision Ivy, they called it unbeatable until someone came up with a car named Calimine Lotion or however you spell it.

Yep. He is, he works out of town 90% of the time. He's a lazer engineer. But the time we do get, we are normally out in state parks taking pictures or some other event.

Jay goes out of town like four times a year and I can't stand it. I wouldn't know what to do if he was out more than that. It's great to do stuff together like that, we go fishing a lot and I adore the time we spend together.

I took home a couple baby fish I caught to make pets out of them, a bluegill and a baby perch. Besides the perch being a snob and eating only frozen food they are wonderful pets. The bluey is such a pig he gulps food to the point bubbles stream out of gills because he sucks in air as well. They get along with the wild minnows I caught in a stream around here so well you'd think they grew up together. Those minnows aren't normal little ones either the largest is about 3 or 4 inches and is thicker than my thumb. plus they've all gotton increasingly larger after I got a hold of them That figures.
