Description

Eyyyy, it's mah boy!

I never realized who my favorite character in the LOTR trilogy was until about two years ago when watching the movies, and didn't appreciate Aragorn's arc from a nomadic Ranger unsure of his destiny to the King of Gondor until recently.  Here's a lil tribute to my favorite Ranger (but Faramir is a close second)!  I'm working on something with Aragorn and Arwen, but I'm trying to choose between two pictures of them and which I like better...

Oh my....he looks so gorgeous here! I love all the shading you've done on his outfit, it really does give it a 'leathery' quality! And the detail on his armbands is a very nice touch! I like the slightly antique-gold gleam of his sword too, it definitely looks like a sword worthy of a king

Thank you so much!  I never realized how much brown he wore until I had to look up reference photos for the colors! lol

This was the first time watching the films that I noticed that he inherited Boromir's bracers, so of course I had to include them as a nod.   I've been watching a lot of the LOTR Appendices and appreciating how much hard work went into making all those weapons and designing the swords.  I think Eomer's sword is my favorite by far because of that awesome asymmetrical hilt!

He looks better than the original lol, I love the browns and the way you chose to compose this, with the mountains in the background and Aragorn breaking the frame.

Thank you!  I took your advice and used the background to frame him instead of doing a full blown one.   Yeah, I had to look up a lot of reference pictures for his clothes--I'm considering buying the 'Art of' books for the trilogy mainly because I can use them as ref and they'e jam packed with a bunch of Alan Lee and John Howe sketches *the spirit is willing but the budget says NOPE*

Part of me wants to watch the animated movies, and the other part says I'll be cringing all the way. XD

It's quite fun isn't it? And the fact he breaks the frame makes it more visually interesting.

I think the art book for the films might be full of landscapes and architecture designs - that usually puts me off of a lot of art books, or film related ones at least.

Hint for your birthday, or Christmas, or just a simple gift for the sake of gifting

Oh I remember watching the Gollum part of the animated film, he's frog like, but when I saw it as a kid he freaked me out. I like the fact that the art style for the animation was 'ugly' like the Last Unicorn, it made a change to see so many facial wrinkles lol.  Obviously for the time it was a great adaptation but i've never seen it all the way through

I'm going to try to incorporate that in the comic too (yet another way to avoid full backgrounds, aha!)

I've checked them out at the library a few years back and they had a lot of armor/costume/creature designs along with set designs.  I'm pretty interested in all of that (I sort of wish I minored in Production Design because that class I took was a lot of fun), and they also have colored storyboards to show ideas for certain scenes, like how The Ring's destruction was supposed to look.

I always put the art books at the top of my wishlists because they're typically the most expensive items! XD

I remember when I was little and my parents were obsessing over LOTR (because the trilogy had just come out) and they were watching the animated ones on Cartoon Network.  I was really confused when I walked in the living room and saw this talking tree walking around with two "kids"! lol

With it in the comic you could have figures or objects overlapping into other frames - or make the cropped background and then make the page background one large image (say for a cityscape, in the last panel on the page, it would be the page background and the other frames would float atop - I'll try to find an example of what I mean - I have wanted to try that in my own mediocre comics but never did) - like this images-na.ssl-images-amazon.co… (I own this comic)

However the cropped frames might mess up the page layout a little if you have more than one on the page...

My wishlist is surprisingly bare...I'm really picky about artbooks, i have to flip through them first and if they're not satisfying enough then I get really disappointed. Like these days I've found that a lot of game art books are lacking in a lot of content you wanted to see, and the text to go along with ideas is basically just telling you what you're looking at, even though you figured that out without the obvious being stated...the best artbooks i have are: Dishonoured (the first one, my god that book astounded me and was perfect in its content - Dishonoured II was a waste in comparison, it had nothing), The Terry Pratchett 'Art of Discworld' are always amazing, the ones by Paul Kidby, Avatar (the Last Airbender, Nickelodeon animation NOT the film which was trash) it had character art, animal art, and also lots of action sequence drawings and storyboards.  I also liked the Bioshock Infinite one, but it also disappointed me as I wanted 'more' - the one I really want is a Bioshock 1 and 2 artbook but they never actually made one, which is a shame because damn, the ideas and world are something else.  And 'Okami' - that is an amazing artbook for a game, it has pages upon pages of characters and images but it's falling apart because their binding choice was crap for a book that thick. (as you can see, most of my art books are related to games lol, I only have 'The art of how to Train Your Dragon' as a film related one and it's 'blah'.

, one of my English teachers made us read the Hobbit (he was the one who also showed us the Gollum scene from the animated film), and that was basically my first encounter with the books and I absolutely love that memory - which is probably why the Hobbit itself is more charming to me than the LoTR trilogy, which i only read fully when the first film came out (my sisters and I even made a 'Lord of the Rings' Uno game, with illustrated cards and everything - I wonder where that went...obviously we had nothing better to do with our time...back in those days)

I actually tried doing that before with my really crappy old comics when I was in high school; the example you have here is much more visually interesting than my attempts, and I like how it feels less restrictive than stacking panel upon panel.  Panel variation is one of the things that takes the longest when I'm thumbnailing, which is why it took me four months to get back to updating.   I think I thumbnailed a few pages like this, so we'll see how they turn out!

Yeahhh, the library a town over has a bunch of art books so I've been checking them out there and so far the one with the best content is 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' with a bunch of developmental stuff for the creatures (something I need to brush up on).  I have the art books for 'Attack of the Clones' and 'Revenge of the Sith' and they're my two favorites because they cover everything from costumes, to alien/creature design, vehicles, and environments ('The Phantom Menace' has even more alien/creature designs too--I still need to buy it).  The RoTS one suffers from the same problem as your 'Okami' one because the paper is too heavy and the binding was too cheap so pages just spill out if I'm not careful.  I have 'The Last Airbender' one too!!  It's my favorite animation one so far and I love seeing all the character designs!  I've seen art from the 'Dishonored' book floating around on Pinterest (and have pinned a lot for the unique faces), so that might be one I'd like to look into in the future.

I'm not sure if my dad read The Hobbit before the LOTR books to my sister and myself...I just recall him reading the trilogy before he and my mom decided we were old enough to watch the live action films.  I read all of them in high school and college twice since we watch the movies more so I was getting them all mixed up!  Lol!  That sounds like it would have been fun to play though!

"I am Aragorn son of Arathorn..."  He most definitely has his 'ranger' vibes going here... arm splints with fingerless gloves... oh yeah.

Faramir is such a sad character, he just got such a bad rap. lol I always wonder what his relationship with Boromir was like, they seemed to be pretty close.

(P.S. it would be kinda cool to see a LOTR book with your illustrations!)

I actually paid attention to everyone's costume designs when watching the movies this time and realized how much I love Aragorn's look!   Fingerless gloves are always a good accessory!

Seeing how his father treated him in 'Return of the King' made me like Faramir and hate Denethor even more!  I bet I could find something about them in the Appendices (or I could just reread the books again lol).

!!! That would be so fun!  I'd be interested in doing maybe singular chapter illustrations when I read the books again...

Yeah, I always liked how Aragon had the silver tree hinted too throughout his costume design.

Good point. Knowing Tolkien, it's probably in there somewhere. (he always wrote everything down. LOL)

as I said earlier... that would be COOL!!!

I've been watching the Extended Edition Appendices and the screenwriters had to look through a lot of his writings to bring in extra stuff in the movies that wasn't elaborated on in the books.  The first time I read the books I skipped the Appendices because I didn't think they were important...now I've read The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales and know more about Middle-earth than I thought possible! XD

I mean if it was an actual place, I'd visit it (after Sauron's defeat though lol)...
